Ok here is my question/dilemma. I have a Kioti DK40SE. My manual specifies to use 5W-30 weight oil in the crankcase. Normally I would use Rotella. However, NONE of the local auto part stores in my area have Rotella in 5W30. They all only have 10W40. So, my question... can I just run standard Pennzoil 5W30 in it? Or do I have to use a special oil just for diesels?? Anyone? Thanks!!

The short answer is that you need oil rated for diesel engines. Others will likely be much better at explaining the technical aspects. Don't use regular automotive oil, it will not serve your engine well.

Rotella makes 5w30 in synthtic. Do not use a oil not made for a diesel.

I have a 2011 DK45 SE HST and the manual states the following: (should be same for yours)

Engine oil

above 77F SAE 30, SAE 10W30 or SAE 10W40

32 to 77F SAE 20, SAE 10w30 or SAE 10w40

below 32F SAE 10, SAE10w30 or 10W40

i contacted Kioti last month, and they recommend Rotella 10w30.

i hear rotella has a 5w40 available, but is synthetic, expensive and hard to come by. Whatever yo get has to have diesel equivilent of CJ-4/SM oil (per Kioti customer service/tech support)

Is the 5w30 used year round? The lower the first number the better the cold weather startling. Yes, you most use CD oil for diesel engines.

well, a 5w30 would be better in real cold weather than a 10w30, but i am adding 2 electric block heaters to my tractor so i dont think its going to matter.
I tried for 2 days to find someone near me that could get the 5w40 synthetic...nope.

but the 10w30 is in stock and about $65/5 gal bucket. so i got that.

Also, the cc and cd specifications have been superseded with the CJ-4 specifications according to the Shell representative i spoke to

Shell Rotella T is a line of heavy duty engine lubrication products produced by Shell Oil Company. The line includes engine oils, gear oils and coolants. The oil carries both the American Petroleum Institute (API) diesel "C" rating as well as the API gasoline engine "S" rating. Ratings differ based on the oil.

Thanks for the replies guys. I figured that would be the answer. The guy at my local auto parts store, who by the way is the manager, and has worked there for years, had convinced me that it would make no difference if I ran regular pennzoil in my tractor, just as long as I ran the proper weight. But something still didn't seem right about it. I have always ran Rotella in my tractors. That's what I will stick with. I will just have to find it in 5W30.

why 5w30??? i think rotella only makes a 5w40 in synthetic ...thats what their rep told me.

he assured me the 10w30 would be fine in north idaho climate. i run 10w30 in both of my diesel trucks for years without a problem. oh, and regular oil would have trashed your engine. good thing you listened to your inner voice.

Synthetic oils are not expensive when you look at the whole picture. For example I just picked up a 5qt jug of Mobil 1 today at Walmart for my boat. Takes 4.5 qts. It was $24.50. 5 qts of regular oil was $14 but you can easily go 2 times as long on synthetic without worries. This makes the cost of the oil changed about $30 with filter. If you were to do 2 conventional oil changes it would about $40. So no, synthetics are not expensive, they are cheaper in the long run.

By the way I just picked up 10 gallons of Rotella 5W40 Synthetic at Meyer about 2 weeks ago for my neighbor at $17.99 per gallon.
