I am a believer in s. chains. My primary mower has chains, and I never remember seeing anything shoot out over a few feet, and I have hit my share of things. I have a back up machine without chains and every time I use it, something gets spit out that could be dangerous. I am adding chains to it as we speak.

I think they probably should be required on new mowers.

Sounds like I need to add chains to my mower. Anyone got any pics of their chains? and is it better to weld them to a piece of flat bar then bolt it on or just bolt the chains to the mower?
Thanks,
Rick

Rick it is more important to assure the chains are not B****h slapped by the blades You could have a curtain of chain 3 inches apart to reduce the chance of material being ejected.

As long as you use nylock nuts and washers to keep ther links from rubbing and wearing prematurely on the top of the mower you should be fine.

Adding a flap of conveyor belt to the front will add to the level of safety if you have an edge you can secure the rubber to as well.

approximately 6,744 deaths per day in the united states. it's easy to play armchair quarterback: analyze and point fingers after the fact.

my question is: where was this post BEFORE the accident happened when maybe a life could have been saved?

i hate to play devil's advocate over a lost life, but how many days of mowing and number of acres cut are there per death by accidentally hitting a rock? compare that to other accidental losses of life. certainly, any loss of life is tragic, but i just hate the mass of people who love to point fingers and talk about possible lawsuits after something happens. it's impossible to legislate against all accidental losses of life.

We have several threads in the forum about injuries and deaths related to the use of rotary cutters.

Everyone needs to read Iron Horses account of of what happened with his first rotary cutter and the aftermath. It is down right scary stuff.

Edit: I forgot to add most if not all of the front mounted PTO powered and gas powered flail mowers(Caroni, Perugini, Peruzzo, Wessex) have the front safety shields which fold back individually over obstacles; The european mower standards are tougher than ours(sigh)

These incidents are one of the biggest reasons the smaller radio controlled flailmowers were developed and they average an acre an hour or more.

Here is a picture of my OEM setup just before the rear chains were installed.

I think they should have an Assault Mower Ban here in the US.

No, even secondary roads are also contract mowed. The excess equipment was transfered to other counties.

Man, that must have been bad news for the state emps who love running tractors all day. Mowing the secondarys is not that bad of a job, especially when your way out in the country.

Seen a different company mowing the ROW here and they were using disc mowers, with half of the cutain gone. I was shocked to think they would want the risk of using them.

Thanks for the pic and the info, does the stuff usually come out the front, back, sides, or all of the above?
