There is no way to know for sure if the coolant was properly serviced with the required additive. You will have to guess or trust someone. Thing is, the huge majority of powerstroke owners have no idea that the coolant needs any kind of service so odds are that it has not been done. You just don't see it being a problem though which tells me that the additive is not as important as some would have you believe. Really, check out the forums, people just don't pinhole blocks.

For funzies, note that the much more failure prone auto transmission will cost 4000-6000$ to replace. Those autos go out all the time. When you consider that the truck cost 6900$ it makes a simple tranny job enough of a cost to total the truck out.

Looked at the truck today. It needs new tires front end work exhaust and has rust underneath and that was just a quick look.On the bright side the motor seemed strong and the transmission was ok.
I think I'll take Chris's advise and look for one with less miles and less work needed and move up to the one ton.
Thankyou for all the advise.

You will be happy you did and so will your wallet. Even a SRW F-350 is much more truck.

I also will discount the dually receommendation, I've tried both ways and hated a dually, towed no better, hauled a 3000 lb slide in camper no better, IMO, and with a dually you are limited for parking spaces and can forget many drive through windows. The ONLY advantage I see is you have a built in spare with a top heavy load if a rear tire blows.

I agree. I had a Dually and never again. For me a 3/4 ton does not cut it either. Just too close to a 1/2 ton now days. I only want 1 ton, SRW. You can get a Ford F-350 with 11,500# GVWR and a 7,600# empty weight leaves you with a honest 3,900# payload or pin weight.

i'm looking for another power stroke.. seen a few with lots of undercarriage rust. obviously north machines. quick look under them tells me lots of lines and brake work...

ho hum.. still looking..

trying to hold out for a 4x4 under 150K miles drw, and preferaby crew cab.. though I would take standard or ectended, and auto tranny. bench or bucket seat is fine.

i know this is a personal like / dislike issue.

I feel way more comfortable hauling with my drw f450 than my f250.. just rides better..

to me anyway.

Have to agree with the duals, my F350 dually sways much less at 50mph than my F350 srw. I also feel much better knowing one rear tire could blow, and I still should be able to limp home. For everyday use and limited towing, my F350srw does great. It should be noted though, the OP did not spec how much weight he intends on pulling.

true enough on the weight. I went DRW to allow myself loads up to max leagal, whether it was a gn trailer or 5th wheel the wife keeps nagging me to buy.. :)

I also like the fact I can have a blowout going interstate speeds and not immediatly shoot off the side of the road like an express elivator going to 'heck'

I'm one of those carefull / overated people. I still carry a spare for my dually :) and know full well I have more truck than I need for my load I'm currently pulling.. of course.. 'more' rarely hurts you.. :) not enough almost always comes back to bite you though.. :)

It's all in what you do concerning the single or dually, but around here, the singles sell quicker then the duals.

F250-F350 - the running gear is all the same on both. Only difference is the spring packs and the spacer block (lift block) on the 350 rear is taller than on the 250. Axles, wheels, tires...everything is the same but the springs and thus the ratings.

Go ahead and look up any part you like, if you don't believe me. This is for the "current" models from 1999+ (Yes I know there is a new one now - not sure on that one). There may have been differences on the older models, but I do not know those years at all.

that doesn't take into account custom or aftermarket mods like air bags.. or the higher models like a f450+ etc.
