Here is an example:
My brother has a Titanium rod that runs from his knee to his ankle in his leg. When he went through security, he set off the alarm. The female officer made him step aside. He told her of the rod in his leg. She ran her hand scanner along his leg and it sounded. She waved the scanner around the rest of his body and it never made a peep. Every time she ran it down his leg, it sounded from his knee to his ankle.
This would tend to backup what and where he told her the rod is and why it is there.
She made him assume the position and began a hand frisk. She felt the need to frisk his entire body, groping his privates so thoroughly he though she was doing a medical exam.
Now, since the metal was obviously in his lower leg and a frisk of his lower leg did not turn up any "contraband", and pulling his pant leg up and having her scan his bare leg proved the metal was INSIDE his leg, why the full body frisk ... and why all the genital groping?
This is what some people experience and what gets mentioned more then the "good" experiences.

I used to really enjoy air travel... now, I avoid it unless no other option exists.
Last year, I had to make a quick trip from Oakland to Seattle to make a repair... had the parts with me... caused a lot of problems checking in and I was very polite and said matter of factly there is no reason to make the trip without the repair parts... I was told that I should have mailed the items and have someone hold them for me till I arrived.
Anyway, they did some checking and the supervisor decided I was OK to fly... I said I realize they don't have an easy job and left it at that...
Door to door is takes me 5 hours travel time if I fly of 12 hours if I drive... driving, I can take everything I might need and I really don't mind the drive if I have the time...

And with all of us driving more due to our not wanting to fly for all of the aforementioned reasons, the potential for being involved in a fatality goes up, with insurance rates jumping...

So far, I've been very fortunate...
When I get onto Highway 5, it's a straight shot through to Seattle (Olympia)... I don't like looking over my shoulder so I get comfortable and set the cruise control and let anyone in a hurry pass...
Took Mom and my Brother's family to the SF Airport last Tuesday... the place was a sea of humanity... I had never seen it so packed... I think the new self-check-in was part of the problem... one agent has 4 or 5 check-in stations...
Waited till Mom got through security and they seemed to be doing a good job getting people through...
Last year, Mom was given two jars of hard honey from her brother's hives... the first security inspection let her through and then there was one more just prior to boarding United... and you know what happened... they took the honey... Mom protested saying candied honey is not a liquid... didn't do any good.
I asked why she didn't put it in her checked bag and she said it was neatly packed and doesn't put anything breakable in anything see checks.

All my previous experience with flying in and out of Sky Harbor in Phoenix has only been negative.95% of the staff have been total jerks, completely lacking any common sense or reliability in their professional performance.Utilizing deductive reasoning, I firmly believe that you are very, very lucky. If your state has a lottery, you should buy a ticket immediately.

I don't know how the other airports are handling things; only DFW. It used to be that when we took a friend or relative to the airport, we could got through the little security check and stay with them until they boarded the plane. But since 9/11 and TSA, no one but individuals with tickets can pass the checkpoint.
Now that has caused lots of problems for lots of people. (1) Some folks liked to go to the seating areas near the gates and be able to watch the airplanes come and go; no more, but we won't worry about their recreation. (2) All the gift shops, restaurants, and bars are past the checkpoint, so those vendors lost a large percentage of their business, and if we took someone to the airport . . . well, there were water fountains, but no snacks or other drinks before the checkpoints. They did finally put in a few very expensive vending machines. (3) Once a ticketed passenger passes the checkpoint, whoever brought that person or persons to the airport has no way of knowing whether that passenger actually got on an airplane.
For example: Last Fall my wife's 70 year old sister came to visit. On Nov. 1, she had a flight scheduled at 9:30 a.m. to return home. So we got her to the airport about 8 a.m. and the flight was shown to be on schedule. So once she went through security, she was then out of sight and we left. After we left, they changed the departure time to 10:15 a.m., and after that time passed, they cancelled the flight. They eventually got her on a 5 p.m. flight. So she got to sit around alone all day.

Ok well here is one of the downsides of packing stuff in checked baggage. Our group coming back from Ecuador some of us had bought this blackberry syrup made there. It is pretty good stuff. So we packed it in the bags wrapped in either bubble wrap or towels.. Customs checked some of the bags as there was 10 in our group. Some where along the way back to Seattle one of the guys bags were openend and three bottles of syrup were unwrapped and tossed bag into his luggage unwrapped. All 3 of the bottles were broken leaving a huge mess in his bag..He has traveled a lot for his job and Missions work. He said it is not uncommon for Customs inspectors to toss glass items back in unwrapped if they unwrap them.. I'm not sure if labeling the outside of the bag with Fragile or Glass would do any good.

Customs is not the TSA.
When this thread fades, I am going to make a list of the complaints lodged against the TSA. All who can contribute, please do so! It ought to be humorous.
