I am a sheep farmer and am looking to buy a good diesel powered mule. Sometimes I have to pull a half tonne trailer uphill, so a reasonably powerful engine is necessary. I also want to be protected from the weather because it can be cold in winter.

Any suggestions based on experience?

Sounds like a Kubota RTV1100 would satisfiy your need. The 1100 includes AC/heat, will pull your weight but it comes at a price, new you are looking at around 18K. I use an RTV900, no heat and picked mine up used off of a C list posting for 8K.

You can also go with the Polaris Ranger Diesel. They are about 13k and have a $1000.00 rebate or 2.99% financing at the moment. I think they are powered by a Yanmar diesel engine.

or a gas burner Ranger if you are only going to tow 1000 lbs. Plenty or power for that.

Leaving aside the air conditioning and heater, is there any difference between the 1100 and 900?

1100 includes the factory cab, a little more HP and I think the cab is pre-wired for a stereo. I didn't look at the 1100 real close because of the cost. I can live without the AC.

I believe most of the side x sides will tow 1,000 pounds and can be fitted with a enclosure....for a lot less than $18,000.If it doesn't have to be diesel there are a lot of options.

In the diesel debate, I often find myself wondering why professional lawn care folks don't use many of them? They sure put enough hours on them, but you see many more big gasoline powered Z turn mowers than diesel. I have both, and like both, and having put 1500 hours on an air cooled splash, and paddle Briggs garden tractor, and having gotten a very good trade in price for it I'm not sure I understand. Perhaps if you are going to be doing a lot of towing with it the diesel would be a much better choice. Most of them are a bit too wide for use on many o my trails so I may never find out. :(
