Giant Ragweed...

I have been "blessed" with that weed on my property as well. I tried Roundup for a few years and had limited success. The kill off was successful, but the area reseeded itself just as successfully the following year.

I have found that since I got my tractor and mow this area low I have not had a crop this year. Last year I kept the field cut as close to the ground as possible (2" was highest cut) and cut everytime the weeds hit knee high. This year I have only a fraction of the plants I had last year and combined with our drought, I have only had to mow twice this summer before they all died out.

Compared to the years before when I had someone else mow and it reached at least 6-10 feet between mowings, the growth is almost eliminated now. My first year on the property the field was so dense as to be impossible to walk through once the plants hit 4 feet tall. My old garden tractor was too light to even push them over before. I have not so fond memories of trying to mow the 3-4 foot tall plants with the rider and sitting in the seat at a 45 degree angle looking up the stalks because they were supporting the front end of the garden tractor. The L3700 is much more capable of dealing with these miscreants.

I have quit using herbicides since I am able to do the more frequent mowing and am very happy with my results.

Roundup or roundup mixed with a little diesel if it is a non essential area or driveway.

I may try that, I'm using the Round-up concentrate with the red cap. The places I have them, are places I can't get to with a tractor. I could have cut them down with the weedeater, but I didn't get it until June and the weeds were already 5ft tall by then...

i use howse, servis/rhino, or king kutter brand herbacide onmy 7' ragweed!

Depends on what else you want to kill. Roundup will get everything. Dow AgroSciences makes several good products. In Texas you can use Chaparral if you do not have an applicator license, GrazonNext if you do. Chaparral will kill Bahai, GrazonNext will not.

2-4-D works very well for me. 2-4-D, water and some dish soap. Buy in 1 quart bottles over the counter.

sorry.. that was my attempt at making a funny.. those names I mentioned are rotary mowers.

you can for sure sprae roundup or s4d or glyphosate.. etc.. but they will kill somewhat indescriminately around it.. same as using salt water.

i just mow mine down..

That last part was a joke, referring to Bush HOg brand names!

You can get generic Glyphosate with a surfactant, make sure your buying 41% glyphosate according to the label. You should be able to get a gallon of concentrate at TSC for $30 or so, the quarts at walmart ore $20 for roundup brand!! I got 2.5 gallons of 41%gly at agrisupply for $34 this year!

And those of you are correct Glyphosate only kills living plants and is not soil active, meaning you have to hit green tissue with it as well. You can pour the stuff on the ground at the base of a tree and do nothing unless there is a root injury that its flooding.

Ahhh! I realize that now, I'm a n00b... :ashamed: I can mow some of them down, but where I have them the worst I need a sickle bar mower to get to them with. I'll have to wait until tax season until I can get one of those..

i'm not sure I'd sacrifice a good 'hay' mower on ragweed..

perhaps an offset flail mower..

just make sure to hose it off thoroughly afterwards ... the sap remains phototoxic for a loooong time. We've got wild parsnip up here, had some pretty good burns this year from it.

A flail mower would be awesome, but I'm thinking of something that I can get for $500-$1000. We used to use a Ford 600 tractor, with a Ford 501 sickle mower. Whenever I do eventually get into hay work, I'll probably end up with a disc mower.
