It would be nice if they could give us a map with a rough outline (updated every 4 hours) and also give the wind speed and direction. And, if someone could give a rough outline of predicted paths. This would give EOC/LEO's something to work with.

As I type I'm thinking,,,yah,,,,just like a hurricane/storm prediction map!

Thank the Lord the wind is still laying low.

They said a DC10 with a belly scoop is on the way from California.

Kyle -- it's the EOC that should be putting that info out there ....and they aren't! They need a person called a PIO public information officer to put out info to the public via a multitude of avenues .....to the best of my knowledge they AIN'T doin it!

After all the heat and dry conditions, now you folks in Texas have to contend with all the wildfires. I have been following the updates on the networks. Any idea where this DC10 will scoop water up? That is a big aircraft and takes a long low approach to a large body of water to scoop. I have seen her scoop and dump in videos. That is an awesome sight.

Have a daughter in San Antonio, son in Pearland, and several friends in Houston that have offered refuge. Including my old boss who is busy right now as director of hurricane center in Miami -- has a house in Houston he offered. So we do not lack places to run to. Doubt the wife would go for the one offer though. (old girl friend)

Seems like a good use for Evergreen's Supertanker.. which is a 747 set up for water/retardant bombing. Evergreen Supertanker

I would think it would be pretty effective as the land seems reasonably flat compared to the mountains where forest fires happen.

Austin is 30 miles west of Bastrop. Here is a good picture from the Houston Chronicle, looking at Austin's skyline with the Bastrop fire in the background.

Pretty big fire in Bastrop but east Texas has some bad fires going and with the forest available they could get out of hand.

Which brings up the national forest service, has anybody heard what they have been doing?

The National Weather Service in Shreveport has issued a Dense Smoke Advisory which is in effect until 9 pm CDT this evening.

Large fires are burning across East Texas which are located east of Avinger in Cass and Northern Marion counties... near Diana in Upshur county... near the Angelina River in Western Nacogdoches county... and west of Kilgore in Gregg county.

They are all causing large smoke plumes which are blowing in a general southerly direction... reducing visibilities and air quality from now through to this evening. Visibilities will be reduced to 2 miles or less in many locations in the direct path of these smoke plumes. In addition, air quality will be degraded across the region for those that become exposed to it.

I went driving around toward the fire, DPS has the major roadway blocked off way before the burned areas.
