Not necessarially. It depends on what the seals are like inside. If they are a single lip and only designed to seal one direction....

Sure it would work, but you would constantally be blowing by oil and out the vent.

Plus most that I have seen, the vent port is MUCH smaller than it hyd-in port

Later today I will get pictures of the other side of the unit.

Then you guys will know!

Looks similar to a Monarch M-310 12 VDC power unit.

Monarch M-310 Power Unit

I would agree that it was probably on a hay bale spear.

I went out and looked. There are NO VENTS. There are no other ports at all.

The other side is totally smooth.

Perhaps there is a vent hole through the center of the rod.

There almost has to be a way to vent the base end of the cyl, because if fluid ever did leak past the seals, the base end would fill with fluid, and you would have hyd lock.

J_J,

I agree (I have some knowledge of hyd from my days on subs) but I cannot find anything that looks like any kind of a vent.

Perhaps you could put some compressed air to the cylinder and see if it is indeed a retract cylinder?

It doesnt look like it, but it is possible that it is an extend cylinder. With an internal passage from that port to put the fluid behind the piston.

If that is the case, there usually is no vent, it will just leak by the dust shield around the rod.

Like others have said these components are from a hyd tailgate...a pull cylinder...

the vent near the base cross tube.....1/8" pipe plug w/ vent cap....look carefully and you'll see it unscrews....

the cyl is made up internally with a PS1400-64 piston seal (Hercules Sealing Products-Hydraulic cylinder repair seals and seal kits, replacement cylinders and cylinder components for construction and many other heavy equipment industries. ) so the internalls are setup for double-acting use....

problem with these cyls is the vent allows water/salt in and corrodes the barrel near the vent....(best to open it up, inspect, and repack before going any further..)

if you were to use as a d/a cyl the only thing needed would be to weld on a larger fitting (from female 1/8 to 3/8" pipe at the vent) and drill out the openning going into the cyl barrel

also good luck trying to use that 12vdc power unit...:confused2:...it's life has been mostly being dragged around under a truck with salt/water and road grime....

If it is as rusty as it looks then you'll have a chore to clean up to reuse...

these pumps are nasty to restore cuz of the corrosion.....

G'day i would say that it is a displacement cyl which means it will push out. It has no piston usually just a big circlip to stop the rod from coming out, they work on the principle of that as you force the fliud in the rod pushes out so there is room for the fluid. They were never as strong as a normal piston type cyl as there is a smaller surface area for the oil to work on. Oh and it means that they are only single acting and no vent to be found
