Havent done alot of research yet but the brands I suggest first are Royal Purple, Amsoil, Rottella and Mobil 1. RP is usually the most exspensive but by most considered the best. Second and will more than likely be my choice is Amsoil. I plan on keeping this tractor for as long as I can. So I'll treat it right with a good oil. I've even considered becoming a rep for Amsoil.

There are 43 threads with lots of info you can read on synthetic oil.

Everyone has their favorite, but the truth is most oil today is very good. If you compare oils based on testing, there is generally very little difference in any of them.

Synthetic oil has the edge in situations where extreme temperatures are involved. And can it be used for extended service intervals. If you can benefit from either of those, it is worth it to spend the extra money. Otherwise, it is probably not.

If you have a diesel, use an oil that was designed specifically for use in a diesel engine. After that, you can't go too far wrong.

Is there some reason diesel engines would need anything different than Mobil 1 or how about Royal Purple?

Yes. They need a heavy duty diesel engine oil. It will say so right on the bottle. Only these oils have the additive package necessary to keep abrasive soot particles in suspension so that they can be filtered out.

Someone left out the additives that protect the parts from excessive shear forces inside diesel engines..It is not in gas engine oils? There are light duty diesel oils and Heavy duty diesel oils.. The new diesel fuel is supposed to help with dilution of motor oil by the fuel, and by soot...IMHO.

Anyone running Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck in their tractor? It's a 5w40 made for 15w40 applications, I think. I use it in my car with good results...

Don't fall for all the hype. Cummins only "recommends" Valvaline because Ashlund pays Cummins hundreds of thousands of dollars to get there name listed. In fact the recommendation says use an oil "like". Cummins recommends using an oil with a high viscosity index and good testing characteristics. Royal Purple, Amsoil, TRC and Schaeffers all have better testing characterists than Valvaline, Mobil 1, Delo and Rotella.

I'm not saying anything bad about those last four. They are good quality oils, so noone's head should explode. I'm just saying don't make your decision based on how much money a company spends on advertising or sponsorship. Look at Pennzoil in the 80's. How many people used Pennzoil because of Mario Andretti. Pennzoil has changed their formula so it is much better today, but I bet many of you (not all) have a poor opinion of Pennzoil that was formed back then.

I run Amsoil in my BX and yes, it still comes out pretty black. Yeah, you can't just use regular oil, diesel oil is different.
