Thx for the kind words on my B model. That DR A C-114? My company bought a couple off the floor in the mid 70's they had 6-71's! Tilt that huge hood and there was that little Detroit sitting in that huge engine compartment.

It is not a C-114, and I do not recall the model #. I will have to check the plate when I get back home from Afghanistan. I am trying to find a manual for it so I get restore it. Most of the stuff that I do find is for the C-114 though. This truck here has an old 350 Cummins with a 13-speed transmission. And, let me tell you, loaded or not, it gets the wind:confused2: I need to find a shop to do some body work to the cab. And, it would be nice to find a decent 14' dump body to replace the one that is on there. For its age though, it still carries the mail.

C-116 sounds right. And, yes, it does fly!! Stopping?? Well, that is a different issue...:eek:

Minor correction-White never became Freightliner. White in the old days marketed Freightliners and for a time they were "White Freightliner" but it was a marketing deal. Freightliner of course was ultimately aquired by Daimler and then Daimler then poured a ton of money into it.-and probably ruined the class 8 business with their crazy deals-but that is what you get when you are selling fleet orders 5000 at whack with big guaranteed residuals.

White on the other hand was GM's safety valve when GMC got out of the class 8 business and for a time the GMC Brigadiers were sold as "White GMC". Strictly a scam as I understand it to keep them from getting sued by the GM Dealers.

White was eventually aquired by Volvo who in turn ultimately aquired Mack from Renault. Let's keep our fingers crossed thsat the Swedes don't end up pulling the plug on Mack. I was in Macungie PA in June which is where the last Mack Assembly plant is and it was booming. Yard full of completed units awaiting shipment.

Oh yes- as many know, Jac Nasser, the idiot running Ford in the laste 90's, gave the Ford class 7 and 8 truck business to Daimler (who renamed it Sterling) for 300 million bucks. At the time ford was a solid 20+ % of the class 7 market and a 8-10% of class 8. 10 years later, Daimler pulls the plug on Sterling. That is one way to get rid of competition!

Oh yeah, it was the Cummins NHC-CT-270. United Parcel had a fleet of them in single axle Petes with a Fuller 7-speed transmission - pulling doubles. Trans-Western Express out of Portland, OR. was using a similar set up to pull joints (triples) along the I-5 corridor. Shortly prior to that Con Freight and Freightliner abandoned their gas turbine doubles tractor project, was said to be too "thirsty". I was fortunate to see it in Seattle - coolest sounding truck ever...:thumbsup:

E9 = Cummins 903TI
Bob, I drove a then new 74' Diamond Reo tri-axle with the 270 constant torque engine in it. Not sure if was the Cummins NHC-CT-270?

It was coupled to a Spicer 7 speed with the extra deep reduction gears. With the high torque rise, I was glad that the engine had a jake on it. You could actually shift gears on a hill as opposed to having to wait until you got to the top.

Around that same time, I also drove some Mack 235's and a 300 with the five speeds. Having driven quite a few miles with DD's coupled to a 13 speed RR and some various 5x4's, driving the high torque rise engines was almost like an automatic.

I can appreciate a restored B model but driving them was not much fun for someone like me with long legs, lol! The R's are not much bigger come to think of it.

I worked for an company that used to get these R's out of Hayward, California with a long nose. Kind of sharp looking again for that time.

I also drove an F-model with a DD. No wonder my ears are shot!

Also had a couple of years of seat time in a Cruisliner. Killer ride with those early radia tires and a Reyco suspension!

Nice collection! I drove an R600 straight job with a dumping flat bed for a lumber yard in the late 70s. It had a quadruplex - sweetest shifting machine I have ever had the pleasure to drive, once I learned how.
