Bucket truck boom mounted on trailer

/ Bucket truck boom mounted on trailer #11
Here's a trailer mounted boom lift that I use. Believe me, you want the pump running as slow as possible, watch the wind levels and have plenty of diapers on hand.

500 lbs capacity, including the operator. These windmill motors are pushing 300 lbs, so watch the diet....

I learned something from this thread: some people will do anything to get high.

I have worked on alot of bucket trucks over the years, but would not like to use either of those shown in the pics....hehe... especially the one on the flat bed.... What you nuts or something.
The conversation would be "I want you to get on that trailer mounted lift and repair that 60' street light" My answer would be......ah "see ya".
I had to wire a high school gymnasium that had not had the concrete floor pored yet and the ground was a frozen dirt mound. Every move of the boom lift and the bucket would rock 4 feet. Needed new underwear that day. No job is worth that.

No way would I do a trailer boom either. As others have said, there is ALOT more to it than just out-riggers and being level. Boom-trucks weigh ALOT. That trailer probabally only weighs 1/10th of what a truck one does.

Nice pics, but I have to ask.....Who is standing on the top of the mill? Is that you? and where is the saftey harness? I didnt see one but I could be wrong:confused2:

About the safety of trailerable booms.... At least mine has a couple safety features.

You have to have all the out riggers out.
You have to have at least one wheel lifted off the ground (all weight on outriggers)
You have to have the unit level.

The main Boom cylinder has the valve that wont let it fall even if the hose blows. But is has a manual relief valve so you could be let down by someone on the ground. You can also rotate the the entire unit by a hand crank.

It has upper and lower controls. Lower controls can over ride upper (so if you were to fall out and be dangling someone could lower you) this is done by a switch (upper/lower)

It weighs 4700 lbs it is VERY stable. I would not worry about it tipping over even when extended straight out to the side.

Always were a fall arrest harness when in it. (you forget you are that high up)

This is exactally what I would do if I were to ever use one. I would extend it FULLY out to the side, and load it to its rated capacity and maybe give it a bounce or two JUST to see how stable it was. If I felt comfortable at that, then I would be ok in the air where the center of mass is more directly over the trailer.

And I also agree to ALWAYS wear a harness. But that harness also does little good if you are tethered to a homemade machine that isnt up to the task and decides to topple over. Maybe that harness will act like a slingshot and slam you even harder into the ground:laughing:

Safety harnesses SUCK. what good is it to be harnessed to a machine as its falling. I used to harness to the red iron when doing high work while on a boom truck, and got fined by OSHA all the time cause i tied off to the steel and not to the boom. I don't care, as if the boom goes down,. id rather stay hanging on the ceiling. My boss just paid the fines.

I agree with you on that one. When we do high work where I work, we are instructed to tie off in the basket OR a solid point where we are working like a ceiling truss. (all indoors). And there are times when we have to get out of the boom like when we are working on building a catwalk, that we have no option BUT to tie off on something structural.

But if you dont like tying off in the boom, if applications permit, could you use a scissor lift. Because (at least what we are told) no harness is required as long as you stay within the handrails of them. So if you are in a scissor, and technically dont even need a harness, I dont think they could fine you IF you were wearing one and tied off elsewhere.
