obdII meter code questions - egr sensor

well, now that most of my friends found out i have an OBDII scanner, they all 'visit' me at lunch so I can scan their car and see why their check engine lights are on.

Buddy came by yesterday ( at lunch.. ho-hum.. didn't even bring me any either!

)

and had a EGR sensor range high error.

only that 1 stored code, no pending codes, no codes on other modules either.

I take it this is a sensor fault as in it returned an out of range reading, IE.. something on the high side?

I've got a scanner now too, it's like the repair manuals, doesn't solve problems by itself but does help you get a little closer.

Can't help you with the egr issue, but if it was a shop they would just start changing parts.

yep.. i'm guessing that code would = a new egr sensor instalation$$ and then see if that fixed the issue

I'd search the Web for additional info relating to the OBD code you pulled.

My 2004 Isuzu NPR recently threw the P0045 code--major leak in the evaporative emissions system. This usually means the gas cap is not sealing properly. Got a new one on order since the old one is loose.

will have to scan his car again.. can't remember the code number.. it was a 'P' power train code..

oh well.. i'm sure he'll be back.

Need more info soundguy,

Year, make and model engine size, code and I can help. Also does your scanner show data stream or just codes? Do you have an ohm meter and hand vacuum pump?

High generally means mean open circuit where low can mean short so it can be bad connections also or bad sensor thats where you need the ohm meter.

his 'car' is an 04 or 05 dodge grand caravan couldn't tell you engine size, yes I do have a vom, but no vacume pump.. er.. well.. I know a guy with an electric vacume pump used for vacuming down ac systems.. could maybee get that...

ps.. don't know enough about my scanner to know if it streams or just reads codes. can look at the manual more and find out.

just got the thing a week or two ago.. pretty neat...

Ok well no biggy the data stream is not that important to helping you anyway on this type code I was just curious about that.

I am one of 75,000 or so techs that help people diagnose and fix cars all over the world on iATN so once I have enough info I can point you in a direction to find more out.
