ok i have a 2003 new holland tc33d and the fuel guage quit working ordered another sending unti for the tank and installed it worked fine then today i got on the tractor to move it out of the shed and it had quit again (i just installed the new sending unit last week) so i took it all apart again and got it to working again but now when i turn off the tractor it stays at full (yes the tank is full). so i was wondering if when u turn off the tractor if it is supposed to go to empty on the guage? just wondering if i still have a problem before i put it back together again. thanks for any help guys

I can only tell you how my TC33D fuel gauge works. When I turn the key on (not engaging the starter) the fuel gauge indicates the tanks level such as 1/2 full. When I turn the key off the fuel gauge immediately goes to zero. Hope that helps and hope someone with the electrical knowledge can explain what might be happening to yours.

Your gage is supposed to go to zero when you turn off the ignition. The fuel probe is a variable resistor that changes the resistance to ground through the meter. When you turn the key off, all power is removed. If your meter is staying on full, it is because it is sticking (the gage, not the sending unit). You can remove the dash and remove the gage. You may be able to unstick it and get it to work again. If you have to replace the gage in the instrument panel, they are normally around $55 to $60. Mine sometimes sticks on zero and so does my tach. When it sticks, I just slap on the face of the panel with my hand, and then the gages pop up and work perfectly. It seems that sticking gages are common on our New Hollands. I just say that I have to slap it once and awhile to get it's attention.

Does the temp gauge ever stick? Mine quit working and I haven't been able to track it down on my 2000 TC30.

I thought you would be able to give the electrical explanation as to how the gauge and the probe work. Any idea what causes the gauge to stick? Is it increased friction or static on something that the needle rotates or pivots on? It's hard to justify replacing something that a gentle tap can fix.

To my knowledge the gages stick because of contamination probably due to condensation. Our panels are not sealed and moisture is always a problem. Meter movements can stick for lots of reasons because there is only a tiny bit of torque that causes them to operate or a tiny spring that returns the needle to zero when unpowered. They can be stuck against the limit pins (lower and upper) and also have contamination of the needle pivot in the movement. Tolerances are so critical even in cheap meters.
Tcreeley: The easiest way to check your temperature gage is to pull the spade connector off the probe and ground it with a jumper wire to a good ground on the engine. Then turn on the key and see if the temperature gage moves up to maximum temperature. If it only goes part way to maximum or does not move, then it is faulty. If it moves to maximum, then it is probably working fine and maybe your thermostat is stuck open. Temperature probes rarely go bad. More often the gage is at fault, but many times our thermostats also fail.

ok guys i think its the guage here is what i did. took sending unit power wire off guage went to full took it off ground guage went to empty did that a few times but sometimes the guage wouldnt go to full got stuck at half tank when i tapped the dash the guage went to empty while still grounded. hooked everything back up like its supposed to be and the guage would work fine a few times then would start messing up again. brand new sending unit in the tank tapping on the dash would usually send the needle back to empty. anything else i could check? also how do you get the fuel guage out i took the dash apart seen there is a screw holding the guage so after i take that screw out does it just pull out? thanks for the help guys just hate having the fuel guage not working and running it out of fuel.
