Mowing wild hogs

Mad-Mac, I bought a surplus US adaptor to put in my M-1 to fire .308 nato ammo. I kept it in case I ran out of 30-06 for it. It has to be installed with lock-tite in chamber..for use. there were a few adapted to .308, but rare like the true Tanker models? Your rifle looks very clean, mine was blue-sky?

I never thought about an adapter. I thought they had to be re-barreled. They have been re-barreled for everything from .243 to .458 Winchester Magnum. I put an open gas nut on mine to make it a straight pull. Saves wear and tear, lets you shoot heavier loads and the empty brass cases don't get ruined so quickly for reloading.

My wife and both sons use the .308 after trying several different rounds. My first was a 742 years ago then we bought my son an HK91. I bought my wife a 742 and one of my sons uses a Savage and another a custom sniper rifle on a 700 action. We don't have anything bigger than deer, but the .308 will handle larger game. My youngest son has an M14 like the one he used in the Navy and while I really can't shoot one, I would really like to have the Springfield SOCOM.

My shoulders are shot, so I now use a .243 in a Remington Model 7; also have some 5.56.

Triple r you are not alone, My 14 is not short and nearly as handy as a Socom. but you need aloan to buy it? The shorter the barrel the louder the blast from a .308...I have a very short bolt gun, bought it to shoot deer from a tree....blast is unreal so I bought a Smith device to break up the sound..I love that cartridge for effectiveness and energy..

I have a BLR in .308, which is my favorite rifle.

I have to go out of my way to find 180 gr Remington, which shoots the best, but in a pinch almost any town in the US has .308.

I really prefer the 180 grain bullets: deer, elk, hog, cougar, black bear it takes them all down, and no sight changes if I stick with one type of ammo.

Those pictures Eddie posted make me want to go hog hunting something bad. Man, does a smoked wild hog sound great right now!

I guess I am just not a big fan of hard kicking rifles. I have fired friends 300 WinMags and .338 magnums and they are fine, and if I was going grizzly hunting I would have one, But I just don't need one to take a whitetail or a hog. My .02 for what it is worth.

Same here, I looked at a Model 70 in 300 WM when I bought the 270, and I remember thinking I might want to use the rifle when I was a lot older, or even shoot it more than a shot or two at a time. No point in pounding myself sore as long as it gets the job done.

The 270 in the Featherweight Model 70 kicks hard enough for me. Nice, flat shooting rifle with good power, but bullet selection is limited, especially in ready-loaded ammo.

We hunted boars with shotguns in NE North Carolina, because big caliber rifles were illegal in most eastern counties due to the Tidewater area DOCTORS/LAWYERS/iNDIAN cHIEFS COMING DOWN AND SHOOTING HORSES FROM 300 YDS, MISSING AND HITTING A HOUSE 3 MILES AWAY, ETC...Sorry, hit the caps lock!:ashamed:
But I can tell you that 00 buck or rifle slugs or pumpkin balls will do the job at the range you get to shoot in that area anyway. The boars there were the traditional Razorback pigs seldom getting over 150 lbs for a boar and 120 or less for most sows.;)

I hunted them down in Tennessee with a bow over dogs. We got in a spot where only 2 dogs had them bayed. The hog broke loose and came at me. I threw the bow in one direction and went a couple feet up a tree in the other.
We picked the dogs up again and cornered the pig in a drainage ditch. 1 -125grain Wasp broadhead through and through put the mojo on him. He ran about 75 yards before he went down. Shot another the following day. Caught napping and shot him where he lay. I carry a Colt Python with jacketed bullets if I'm walking the property and sometimes in a shoulder rig when I'm mowing.
Say what you like, a boar's tusks are sharp but not the true razor's edge that people talk about. I'll be damned if I'll be intimidate by anything on my property - well bigfoot might give me pause for thought.
The easiest way to kill them is over bait. Get them working 100 lbs of corn at a time. When they get to feel relaxed put out a couple hundred lbs. out and call a couple buddies over. When they show up, usually after dark get your wife to jack light them and them open up. 3 of us killed five one night. An AK works really well for this.

...An AK works really well for this...

My ranch hand got a double on hogs one day with the SKS we keep in the work truck. Holds ten rounds and shoots the same 7.62X39 cartridge as the AK. It stays in the work truck because I bought it for only $67 back in the good old days.
