i buy for a couple of salvage yards and depending on the pieces i find for them i get between 250 and 500 just for locating them and making a deal the salvage yards do the rest (which is mainly newer tractors that aren't many broke yet)

I could see paying $50 or maybe even $100 but there is no way I would pay someone that kind of money just to find one, unless it were an extremely rare tractor. In the case of the tractor I will be looking for (Massey 135 or 150), it's anything but rare.

Some people call it a "finders fee". I call it "net profit". If I see a decent tractor at a good price, I usually BUY it. Then, after I "find it", you'll be able to buy it at a slightly higher price. Not trying to sound greedy, but that's how I make a portion of my income. You will always get a GOOD tractor when you buy from me, you just won't get a "cheap tractor". I sell @ full market value. It brings me much personal discomfort to trade dollars and leave money laying on the table.

What is your actual tractor budget? If know several of us could provide leads..I just saw a MF 150 for sale on Sunday while on a sunday drive If I knew your tractor type and budget I could get the number and let you work the deal.

I have a tractor jockey friend who is a really good tractor mechanic who does as FWJ does "finds em" "repairs em" and "sells em" Not a bad way to buy a older tractor if you dont have the necessary experience.

There is nothing wrong with making a reasonable profit but it usually involves buying a "cheap tractor" and selling it for more than you paid for it in much the same way as a dealer does. Noone likes to leave money on the table, where sellers try to make as much as possible and buyers try to save as much as possible. Economics 101.

What is your actual tractor budget?

It greatly depends on the tractor but when the time comes (1-2 months), I plan to spend between 3-5k for the right tractor which should leave enough room for me to spend an additional 2k or so on it's restoration.

I saw one tonight on a local site. MF 135 gas with attachments for $3600 but likely negotiable. It's in Southeast Missouri, and I sent you the link in a PM. Good luck!

Thanks for the info on the tractors but unless someone has one and is willing to wait, it will be 1-2 months before I will be ready to buy one, due to a recent financial setback.

When the time comes, I will be certain to make it clear that I have cash in hand and am ready to buy because unlike the last time I went tractor shopping, I absolutely plan to get a tractor this time and won't have to rely on the uncertainty of financing to get it.

Plain and simple.
It's a fair price when the buyer and the seller don't feel like they cheated each other.
