Sears Tools That Suck On The Price

Can anyone think of one POSITIVE thing that Sears does well today?

How about repair service for appliances, whether you bought from them or not? I had them repair a Whirlpool window unit A/C this Fall that I bought from Lowe's 6 years ago.

And I still like Sears for a lot of tools and appliances. I recently wanted some particular sized little sanding drums for my Dremel. I looked at 3 Walmarts, 2 Home Depots, and 2 Lowe's when I was in those stores for other things and none of them had the Dremel accessories I wanted. So I stopped by Sears and there was exactly what I was looking for.

Yup, I buy at Sears because they have just what I want and the quality is better than the junk others sell.

Now if only Sears would have a guarantee on their 1/4" socket set case. Or if someone would sell a decent case including Sears. I've looked at buying another no-brand set and tossing the sockets and keeping the case but there aren't any good cases with the junk sockets.

Rest assured that Sears DO NOT have any tool factory.
Everything is a re-branded made in China, probably in a factory owned by B&D/Dewalt.
(Or maybe I should say B&D/DeWalt/Stanley.)

Real scary when you learn of all the brands that DeWalt and Stanley actually own.
Just recently Stanley and DeWalt joined up.
The only brands that I am positive of being independent are Makita and Hitachi.

And even the Japanese brands are getting more and more made in China. Few weeks ago needed a bigger grinder. TSC and Lowes both had Dewalt and Hitachi, knowing the Dewalt was Chinese I deicided to got with Hitatachi picked it up looked at the label "made in China". Can't win for loosing.

Appliance sales. At least in this area, Sears is a better place to shop for appliances than Lowes, Home Depot, or Best Buy. Between sales and delivery, Sears just seems to have their act together better than the other stores around here. That was obvious to me when we bought a new fridge two years ago. On top of that, they had the best price by about $300.

Other than appliances, I feel like Sears is a bit out of touch with modern retail.

You only buy USA tools? Do you mean made in the USA? And are you talking about hand tools only ("hard iron" is what the tool distributors call them) instead of power tools?

As for why to pay twice at much at Sears? Well, it depends. I have tools from Sears and I also have some from Harbor Freight. The Harbor Freight tools are frequently good enough for my use, but the quality really is not as good as Sears tools.

I hate to see manufacturing jobs leaving the USA as much as anyone, and I know some stuff made in China isn't as good, but in many cases, it's just as good, or even better. For example I have two pair of sneakers that will be 3 years old in less than 2 months, so they've been worn a lot, and don't even show any wear yet. They're the most comfortable, longest lasting, toughest shoes I've ever owned and they were made in China. Of course, there are some cheap shoes made in China, but these cost $100 a pair, so China definitely makes some good products if you want to pay for them, but if you want the cheapest . . . well, you can get that, too. And as I said, sometimes cheap stuff is good enough for the intended use.

Yes, sorry I meant made in USA tools only. I try to buy US products when possible. All of my hand tools are US and include brands such as Snap-on, Matco, Mac, Bonney, Proto, Blackhawk, Williams, Craftsman, etc. When it comes to power tools it is harder to find US tools. I find that alot of the Taiwan power tools are pretty good also.

Some of us don't want to buy Chinese products reasons other than questionable quality. Like maybe because they $50 billion in patent infringements, their views on limiting children per family, oppressive tactics towards their people and free trade, etc.

Maybe you can, but I can't see supporting that kind of society. Hopefully you won't kick me off the website fo disagreeing with you.

Nope, nobody gets kicked off for disagreeing with me or anyone else. However, in this case, you and I are probably not in disagreement. I was only talking about product quality, and the fact that it's almost impossible to buy some things without finding they're all made in China. That doesn't mean I agree with everything they do, such as the things you mentioned.

That is one positive going for Sears I agree. In 2010 we bought a Samsung frig to replace our 1982 Kenmore and 2011 a Kenmore dishwasher to replace our 1985 Kenmore dishwasher.

i won't use kenmore anymore... sears stuff used to be good.. but has turned to expensive junk.. might as well pay a cheap price if buying junk.

I can remember in the ld days, moving and taking my washer dryer with me.. they were investments and lasted 20ys. now if you can get 10ys out of them you should get a plaque!
