Ford 1700 4WD
Just joined TBN, but have been reading on it for quite awhile. I have a 1981 1700 4WD, and I must say, it's one heck of a tractor. I bought it used in 1987 with 720 hours. I have put it to heavy use brush hogging, scraping a long driveway, snow removal for the neighborhood and cutting firewood. Because of health problems it hasn't got a lot of use the past few years. The problem I'm having with it is the lift will raise on it's own. I've changed fluid and cleaned the filter, and put new o-rings and seal in the lift piston. I had just been using my hand to keep the lever in place for what little I used it. But now that I'm getting more back on my feet, I'd like to get the problem solved.

My ford 1300 vibrates up also.:( I just move the lever under the adjustable stop, instead of down against it.

My very first suspicion is that your lift spool does not go to Neutral position. for any given height if 3 point arm the feed back control will push the lift system in to neutral position. In neutral position all the oil that hyd pump pushes has to go back to the sump or you dead head the pump. How far does it go up, does it aquak when it get all the way up? can you lower raise otherwise?

If the lever is vibrating up there is a tension nut on the liever shaft that needs to be tightened. On my 1900 there is a cotter pin that has to be removed to tighten the nut up some.

JC,
Lift works pretty much normal otherwise. It will go all the way up and vibrates doing so. It also changes sound and reduces engine RPM when it reaches the top.

Thanks, I'll give it a look tomorrow.

Do you know what 3 point pressure relief and it's function is? do you know where it is located? Does the relief chatters and bugs the engine when it goes to max height? when is in max height without chattering does it still goes up till chatters? There is a nut on the lever(lift handle) that has friction gasket (some might be actual leather), that might be lose. I don't reckon with new information you have issue with anything other than tightening the nut. Max travel nut does what it says, it only stop max lift travel (adjustable).

if lever in the middle creeps up then I tighten the nut. If you want pic of it let me know and I'll post it.

JC,

Pictures would be good. I'm lost when it comes to hydraulics. I'm also not familiar with the pressure relief and where it's located.

Kypappy,

I assume when you say lift is raising is with the lift arm coming up along with the lift handle where you manually raise or lower. If that 's the case more than likely you have no issue with your hyd system. Please look at the picture below. what you see is the lift arm pivot point is attached to the spool valve. You see a bolt with a cutter pin. You see several washer stacked together. Those washers cause friction depending how tight that nut is, the cutter pin is there to maintain desired friction. You need to remove the cutter pin and tighten the nit a bit and put the cutter back in again. You do not want to make it too hard as you will not be easily lower and higher the lift handle. Opposite of that (lose) cause movement of lift handle without operator's input. Amaxwell, I think cure suggested would work just about the same with your rig.

JC,

I have several threads that go thru the whole hyd system on 1700. If you use search option under my handle you'll find them. do ask question if you have any. If what I suggested did not work then we get deeper in it.

Thanks for all the help. I looked up some more of your posts this AM and have spent the morning and early PM fixing the problems. I got the linkage adjusted and cured the lugging problem. I then tackled the lift problem and it was quite a hassle. The nut and cotter pin were rusted and I finally broke the pin but did get it out. After numerous attempts I finally fouled a pipe wrench on the shaft, used my lug nut persuader to loosen the nut, sprayed rust remover on the exposed shaft and then tightened it. I seems to work fine now. My bracket over the shaft and nut looks different and is held on with two 15mm bolts.

It might be elsewhere on this forum, but just in case it isn't, the glow plugs on the 1700 are off the shelf NGK Y-401-3s and are available on Amazon and part stores for $11-13 bucks. The thermostat can be replaced with a Stant 13008 and goes for about $4 at Advance. It's an 180 degree tstat but works fine.

Thanks again,

Kypappy
