A test dry fit:
HickoryDoor012.jpg

That's as far as I got today, I don't have enough boards to do a proper shiplap, I really don't want to bother with tongue groove, so I will cut a slot between each board and use screws and Gorilla Glue. If the rain holds off I should have it done by tomorrow.

It was almost 70 today...not a cloud in the sky!

Shows a door like our front door. We have it out of knotty alder though. It has the speakeasy, grill, clavos and straps. We also went with the anti-kick in door frame kit and the longer screws in the hinges.

Im not clear on how the boards connect in the vertical plane. What is going to close the gap? Glue?

I am not a big fan of the regular gorilla glue. The shelf life is terrible and the expansion can cause problems in certain applications. (I assume you are talking about the stuff in the brown bottle.) I would use a two part marine epoxy or Tightbond waterproof wood glue.

I have never tried their wood glue, it may be great. I love the tape.

Fb, that's a nice looking door. I am going to install an unusual feature in the door, but I will hold off on showing it until it is done.

Yes Brandi....you have the tractor/loader, now you need the mill;)

Yep, the expanding glue. It holds well, is water activated which also means it's water proof, can be sanded and stained and the holding power on wood is fantastic. I cut expansion slots full length on the inside edge of all the boards, and will clamp them until it sets, so expansion is not a problem.
I might back it up with screws or all-thread...haven't decided. Off to the hardware store............

A door forged door handle with an oak leaf or fancy escutcheon would really set that door off.

It oughta be stud hoss stout with 8/4 hickory .

Mike... careful with that forge talk, it might mean more work for you:laughing:

I decided to glue and use 6" bronze screws to put it together, that way it's stronger and I don't have to drag out the giant pipe clamps:

I also countersunk and screwed on the end frame sections:
