Moving...ship, sell or haul?

I would sell it like Dmace said and invest the money in something secure so its there when you need it.

At least speak with the sales rep at ABF U-Pack and advise them of what you are wanting to do. Know the weight and length. ABF also has "POD" like containers. I don't know anything about those but their website is quite informative.

You may have to have the tractor moved to the closest terminal and then do the same at the other end.

Likely cost you money either way you go.

I agonized over this while facing a 600 mile move four years ago. I had an 8ton Case 4x4 and a small 40 hp Massey plus various pieces of equipment. Sold all but the Massey to a neighbor and my property buyer. Left the Massey at a dealer on consignment but it never got sold for whatever reason so I hauled it in my horse trailer.

Got it here, decided to sell it on consignment here because I did not want to be bothered with it. I did not get what I wanted but two days later after it sold, the front wheel drive axle broke so o'well.

That Case was too big for my present needs but man I sure did love that tractor.

personally before i paid 3500 to ship id pay 3500 and buy a trailer to haul it with. then you can resell the trailer if need be.

It can't hurt to post it on Craigslist for a price you would be happy to get with the terms of your choice, like cash.

And you can go to your nearby truck stop and post it as a 'load available' once you figure out where you want it. You'll find someone willing to haul it cheap.

Get on line and find some trucker looking for less than load back haul. You may be suprised on a reasonable quote. Where are you going to put your money that pays a good return. If you are able to do this and get a secure return you should be in good demand.

It's an emotional issue, for sure.

I would first look at what you can get selling it locally. Then look at what you would have to PAY to buy a similar used one at the new location. Some area markets are such that it would make sense to sell high and then buy low. What you don't want to do is sell it in a depressed area with low prices then have to buy in an area with HIGH prices.

My guess is that tractors may be cheaper in the TN area as it's more farm oriented. If that's the case, it's probably best to part with it and buy one where they are are cheaper.

Just my two cents worth, but I would think you'd take a hit when you sold your tractor. You invest in a 2% or less CD for a year or two (if you're like me, you'd want to get out of a condo and onto your new property ASAP, not 4 or 5 years down the road) and pay taxes on whatever interest you gain. Then, you go thru the hassle of buying new equipment, and pay the sales tax on it... not a way to maximize your money's utility. I'd find a sympathetic buddy or relative to hold onto my tractor until I had my new land.

Thanks to all of you for the great ideas. I will do some more research and see what makes the most sense. Thanks again for your time and thoughts.

I don't know that much about Bobcat CT's, but here is something else to think about. If your tractor is a few years old and has a simpler emission control (Tier2?) than what is available now or in the future, or some other features that may not be available, those could be other reasons to hold on to it. If your condo home has a garage where you could store it that would remove one issue also.
Good luck whatever you decide.
