buying out of state

   / buying out of state #11
I just went through this for the second time ! I wanted to buy my tractor local when I bought it but ended up out of state for 3 reasons farm tax in this state is 5 % and 1% in the other 2 nd seems like the local dealer forgot you after the sale when you needed help or service 3 rd saved a couple more thousand on price cuts ! Then last week I decided to go buy all new hay equipment 40 000.00 plus purchase local dealer drug it out for 8 days and still hadn't completed all details . I had enough took a 2 hour drive with in an hour I had and tour of the equipment buy the owner Wich had a lot of knowledge of using the equipment with pro's and conn's for each item we sit down , I decided on what I wanted and the options he gave me the prices and cut me some discounts pulled the credit app had me approved no interest 1% tax no down ! Saved me thousands . And I was out the door proud owner of new equipment and very happy with my dealer . Following week I brought my tractor up for some service and warranty work they covered it and went right to work on it and told me it would all be done in the week. The tractor was purchased from a different dealer previously. I may have to drive 2 hours instead of 30 minutes but the service and help I get from them saves me weeks with out equipment they even offered a loner while mine was in the shop! I couldn't be happier with my choice or my dealer!

Poor service should never be supported. If you want to stay in business, the customer really does need to come first, within reason, of course. In my business I know agents who act as if their customers owe them, and frankly, it is the other way around. They make it difficult for me because they tick enough folks off and they go to 1-800 or internet buying.

When this stuff comes up, I always wonder what do these dealers tell people that move from someplace else? What, do you have to sell your tractor and buy one from the local dealer to get any type of service? :rolleyes:
:thumbsup::thumbsup: Good One!

Thanks for the opinions. I have to apologized for brining up the dead horse subject that you all have had to talk about time and again. I was just curious how it works. I am with most of you. I am all for giving my closest (local) dealer (25mi) an honest chance to make the sale. If they are close to the others with price. They have recently taken on the Mahindra line and are currently working on getting some inventory in. As far as service I have heard their two mechanics are very good and they will work on any tractor you bring them. At this time though their biggest Mahindra model is the 3616. I am interested in this model but wanted to explore other options like the 35 series. I will be going to two other dealers to at least look a the 4035 in person. My local dealer has already advised me it would be no problem ordering the tractor I wanted if they did not have it.

I'm presently shopping for a 5035. Have a quote from a dealer 500 miles away for about $4000 less than any local dealer. I'm going to visit another local dealer to test drive and price a 5035. I don't. Mind supporting locally but that is a lot of money. I plan on showing him the quote from the far away dealer. Like I said. Ill gladly pay to stay local but not $4000 worth.

Hey everyone, does anyone have any experience buying from a dealer out of town or out of state and use a different dealer for service. Does this make any warranty issue that may arise difficult?

Hasn't been a problem with my truck, I shop for the best deal and service it at the local dealer.

My local dealer stated to me they will only warranty what is bought from them. Needless to say I bought it from out of state

As noted elsewhere on this forum, went to the other local dealer and discussed tractors and buying. He quoted me a fair price for a new 5035 shuttle shift and essentially gave me the same deal minus shipping cost and he will fill the tires. I feel like he made the effort and am glad to stay local and support him. Was not looking forward to hauling a tractor from Fla. To Va.

I don't think a dealer would mind at all doing all he could for such a customer and trying to earn the right to be his dealer. It is the customer that spends hours of your time, then buys out of state solely to evade sales tax that gets most dealers riled up.

I've been cheaper than an out of state dealer by a fair amount, but on a $30k tractor there is over $2k in taxes. So I can be $1k less on the tractor price, yet $1k more on the bottom line. Freight helps mitigate the savings the customer gets by evading sales tax, but for $2k you can haul a tractor a long ways.

I also noticed the guy that said his local 5035 was nearly $4k more than a distant one. While that could be true on an apples to apples basis, I bet the one dealer was applying the $3000 combined CIL on that model, and the other dealer had his prices at 0%, which negates the CIL (cash-in-lieu). That brings the difference to about $1000 before any negotiaion.

Brian, I know that the dealer that used to be in your area was charging full list plus freight. So on a 7520/8560, he would be at least $5-6k over normal selling price. If a guy is trying to hold those kind of margins, I would not support my local dealer either. One should not just blindly go to his local dealer, that would not be prudent.

Dave. Im the guy with the 500 mile away quote. The price is "Cash out the door" on both tractors. I know how to price the tractors with and with out financing. Good thing is my local dealer wanted to get close to the other dealers price. I understand that dealers need to make money, used to be a small business owner myself but not a $4000 difference.
