I need a weed/vegetation killer that is more "permanent" than the stuff you buy off the shelf at Lowe's. Anybody have any suggestions? p.s. I can't use motor oil or nuclear waste...I need something designed for the job. Thanks

Hi

If you need something "designed for the job" then you need to specify the weeds. There are different chemicals for different weeds; annual or perenial, woody or non-woody weeds, etc. First step is to identify the weed or weeds if you have more than one type.

Some chemicals might require a course or licence to buy them. Also will there be animals or people around where the chemical will be applied?

Farmers use roundup with an emergent in it, so it kills the weeds that are growing and the ones that try to come up. That's available commercially, but not at the local big box. Is there any reason you think roundup won't work? There's generics avaialble now that are cheaper and just as good, I use it for keeping my fence line clear. Whatever you use won't be permanent, you have to apply it several times to pickup all the lifecycles of different weeds.

Depending on where you are having issues with weeds will also have an impact. For example, if you are getting weeds continually in cultivated ground, it could be because some weed seeds have an amazingly long potential for germination.

According to some experts in this field, you may see seeds germinating after as long as 25 or more years in the ground when they are brought up near the surface where conditions favor emergence.

So if that is your situation, it may take several years to break the germination cycle. We've got a garden that I just about gave up on, and actually reduced tillage (sort of a poor man's version of minimum till) which seemed to help. But the reduction in weeds may have just been coincidence, as I'd been trying to stay ahead of the new weeds, and I might have finally gotten most of the dormant weed seeds up to germinate and then kill off.

In addition to mulching, pulling, hoeing, and carefully using Roundup, I also just let the garden go at the end of the season and let whatever wanted to come up grow, and then burned it all off. This year, we have the least weeds coming up yet.

The irony is that this year I just convinced my bride that it would be less expensive (and a lot less work) to just buy our veggies at the farmer's market!

You need something that is soil active. Look for a herbicide that has Imazapir(spelling) in it, look for trade name Arsenol. This will control the growth of anything in the soil so it will kill it and keep killing it for months after aplication unlike roundup which has to be applied to green vegitation or cambium layers to work. Roundup (chemical Glyphosate) forms harmless crystals once in contact with the soil.

He said he wants something more permant. Spraying vegitation is not permanant, as the next seed that blows in or germinates now that the soil is exposed to sun will sprout. He wants something that is soil active and will control (kill) things that try to regrow after the applications.

They exist trust me i have an applicators license so i do know a bit about this stuff. I dont use it everyday but i do hold one, and my knowledge is geared more at the forestry aspect of things.

Put down concrete.

Permanent? You might want to define the problem a little better. When it comes to weeds, short of covering up the soil permanently, there is no permanent.

If you mean longlasting, there are plenty of options, many of them have side-effects, the most important being negative effect on water-quality.

Sounds to me like you need a knockdown chemical and a pre-emergent. Google these for plenty of options, or just call your local ag extension specialist.

I use Trail Blazer Maxx from Chem Search, comes in a Ready To Use(RTU) or a concentrate.Have used both and it kills everything I have sprayed it on from thorny brush to Johnson grass. In 7-10 days what ever I spray is dead. Do not need an applicators license for it.

Try GroundClear. Supposedly nothing will grow for one year. Or Preen - three months.

What I do is spray with Roundup (at about 50% higher concentration than recommended) and then put landscape fabric down and cover with mulch or gravel if I'm trying to make a path or something.

I got in trouble last year for walking across the lawn after spraying a lot of Roundup. Transfer from my feet did not please my wife. I use at least 20 gallons of Round-up a year - sometimes mixed with blackberry/vine killer.

I don't think I can commit to having a bare area for a whole year with GroundClear - or if I make a mistake like I did with the lawn. Costco sells all this stuff in bulk around here, although I'm not certain they always have the best price on Roundup. It's hard to compare the concentrations between stores.

I used salt around my garage to keep anything from growing close by. It lasted a long time. There weren't desirable plants nearby, so it couldn't hurt anything. You can buy it cheaply for water softeners.
