I'm getting SO SICK of gas prices and car taxes!

I spend about $1600 per month on gas, sometimes more. In reality its not such a bad thing. I am seeing more manufacturing being brought back to the states from overseas because of the high price of shipping so the high prices do some good. I do not like it as much as the next guy but the truth is we were spoiled. I have traveled all over the world for years as a pilot and I can tell you as much as 10 years ago I was seeing $5-8 per gallon prices in other countries. Fuel did not follow inflation. Remember, those of you wanting cheap fuel that fuel is power. Not power for your engine but power in the world. I would rather pay not for imported oil and use others products and keep ours in the ground for when its really needed.

Not bad ???? Thats DOUBLE my mortgage.

The reason gas was so much more in other countries, is because its so heavily taxed there...... you know, to pay for things like 'free' healthcare.

Lets see, New Hampshire.... Isn't that Ronmeyland and Obamacare?:confused2:

Actually, road use tax on motorfuel goes for infrastructure spending, not healthcare.

Romney was governor of Massachusetts, not New Hampshire. :confused2:

Road use tax here may be used for infrastructure........ sales and other taxes in Europe or Canada go elsewhere.

Don't you remember when gas in the '70s went from $0.30 a gallon to $.0.75 a gallon? We soon got over that. Wait until it goes to $6 or more per gallon, you'll really be moaning. I'm not in favor of it either but it's a reality. Gas won't be the only inflated consumption that we will have to deal with in the future. Inflation isn't pretty.

I hear ya, I spent just shy of $2000 last month on fuel and nearly $6000 this year already. It has forced me to not be as lenient on my travel charges.

If you get quality gasoline and fuel consistently from a gas station, remember that if they add water, and don't think some stations don't, you could begin to appreciate quality over price...not only broke down on the side of the road:confused2:, but worse...

It has already been said but just wait, the worst is yet to come. Look at what people pay for fuel overseas. some places elsewhere in the world paying over double what we pay per gallon at the moment.

RollingFarms,

What is the $800 vehicle tax? Is it annual, like a registration fee?

Yeah annual. They tax you $300 whether you buy a used car or a new car, price doesn't matter, whenever you buy. You have no way of knowing what vehicles get taxed annually more then others. For instance my friend and I both drove 2004 z71 extended cabs, we lived in the same county, the tricks were $125 difference in sticker price. He had 4,000 more miles on his then I did yet his taxes last year were $230 and mine were $308. Explain that.lol he also has a specialty tag whereas I have a farm tag. My tag is $15 a year and his is $120 a year. See how foolish it sounds? I also have a friend who drives a 99 z71 with 227,000 miles on it and his taxes this year were $185 and thats WITH high mileage discount which was $15. How they arrived at $800 for my current 1/2 ton truck is anyone's guess.

I just (well, March 29) paid $42.75 for the tags on my 2003 VW Jetta Diesel. I just paid $4.039 for Diesel, regular gas is $3.669. Both prices are down from two weeks ago and expected to trend lower which is unusual for this time of year. Most trailers under 3k pounds have permanent tags which have a one-time tax of $55. Interestingly there is no yearly registration fee on a semi-trailer. I recall paying a one-time tag fee of $10 for a semi-trailer good permanently.

I also just (April 5) paid the annual property taxes on our $145k home - $1774, up $156 over what it was five years ago. We are a block from a farmer who is actively farming who has about a quarter section (for int'l members 160 acres, 65 hectares) valued with home and buildings at $953,000 who pays $1554 in property taxes per year. All info is publicly available on-line.

And, to make matters worse, I recently filed our income taxes. On joint income (I'm retired, no pension, no social security until this September, most all is my wife's) of $80,862 we paid $3406 in state income tax for 2011. I will have to pay about $75 (estimated) for the tags on our 2004 VW Passat Diesel in a few months. So far the total local and state taxes I've listed are about $5,300 EXCEPT we also pay 7.375% sales tax on most things except for food and clothing and many services. I can only very roughly estimate what we will pay in sales tax but I'm sure it'll be about a $1k (no big purchases planned).

I'll buy a fishing license in a month ($??). We also pay the usual annoying piddly taxes on monthly utility bills and, of course, road tax at the pump which voters not too many years ago voted to raise to $.275/gal. in Minnesota (after the then governor vetoed a road tax increase.) I fill each car about once a month (I record the fills, they get great mileage!) so my yearly road tax is about $100, $150 if we take a long cross country trip but then that isn't in our state. We fly a couple of times a year and there is a local and state tax on the tickets but I don't know what it is.

That about sums up all our state and local tax liability for a year: very, very roughly $7k.

Of course, we also paid federal income tax: $7055.

Don't forget to mention that trail permits have just about doubled in the past 4 years both snow and summer, On top of that with gas prices, it just kills tourism $.
