What Do You Do?

Some amazing talent here!

I grew up working for my father (ever since I could hold a shovel) in his small excavating business. Even though I went on to college and have done other things, I've always played a role in that business until he shut it down a few years ago.

I went to school for Civil Engineering, working full time for most of that with a pump manufacture. I went on to work for MA DOT, and then to my current job as a Project Engineer for a large A-E consulting firm where I've obtained my PE license and have been steadily moving up the ladder.

On occansion I miss the dirt, sweat, and diesel fumes but I don't think I could support my family running a small business now. Its difficult enough as a consultant.

I don't know how to create anything, don't know much about fixing things or really anything tangible. I'm a CPA and without the internal revenue code I wouldn't be worth much at all. I really respect the people on this board that really know how to do these tangible things.

I own/drive a tractor/trailer dump truck. That pays the bills so I can farm. :D

Well, I posted that early on in this thread. After reading 17 pages of replies, I feel that I didn't elaborate enough. So, here's some additional info:
Started out in my early teens hauling hay, working on chicken farms, and fixing flats at a local gas station.
At 14, my cousin began training me to operate heavy equipment. I've owned and/or operated dirt equipment, off and on, ever since. (and still love doing it)
At about 16, I started working for another cousin as a carpenter's helper.
At 18, I went to work for Brown & Root. Depending on what was available, I worked both as an equipment operator and a millwright.
At 21, I started college. After one year, I decided to drop out and I bought my first backhoe and dumptruck.
At 22, I married, and that's when the "real" work began. :D
At 25, with my wife out of college and working a good job, I sold my equipment and went back to college. During the summer and holiday breaks, I continued to operate dirt equipment for my cousin.
Nearly 28 years old, I finally graduated from college with a degree in History, and a minor in Religion.
After college, I started driving a school bus, and did that for 3 years.
The next spring, my Dad died, and I took over operation of the farm. (cattle, goats, and hay)
While still driving the bus, at 29, I bought another backhoe and dumptruck. This time, I also bought a bulldozer.
At 34, I sold my equipment and started a fire extinguisher service. I worked in the fire protection industry for 14 years.
Last fall, I bought another dumptruck. This time, however, I went big. It's a tractor/trailer rig that can haul a 28 ton load. Still playin' in the dirt!
Here's a pic of the truck: (click on the thumbnail to see the full-size pic)
Additionally, I've been a bi-vocational Baptist preacher for the last 25 years. (bi-vocational just means that I don't make a living at it) :D

I grew up on and around dairy farms and equipment. My dad was an independent farm equipment repairman and welder and growing up I spent all the time I could with him. Dominantly, he worked on Farmall and Oliver tractors and equipment. I could rebuild a Farmall Cub before I could see over the hood and do a clutch job on an Oliver 77 or 88 on a Saturday--not bad for a 12 year old.
I started working on dairy farms in junior high school and continued doing so while in college and even occasionally after entering my profession, just to keep the wolves away from the door.
I've been a police officer for 37 years and am now I'm semi-retired. I teach the DARE program in a few schools and work 3 days a week or so total. Still love the profession even after these years.
My wife and I have about 12 acres. She grows a few vegetables and we have some Christmas trees. I've a 1951 Cub, an old Bolens G154 and have just move upward to a Cub Cadet 6284.
In the summer, I help my wife run a mini-golf business.
