people that only know how to microwave water and downloa music on a cellphone may be SOL... but those that know basic physics and have a few hands on skills should be able to do ok....

Yeah, but not everyone has the skills to home brew a receiver and transmitter. Nor do they have a tractor with a PTO genny....Just make sure you always keep a couple of years or more of diesel stockpile....

This could be a real test for the military's electronic equipment too, which has supposed hardened semi conductors...
Then there is the very real EMP problem, if one of our "friends" like China carried out a pre-emptive strike with a 1 megaton device high in the atmosphere over the mid west, we'd be in the same boat, dead in the water...

Some are - depends upon the vehicle....
Another real possibility however could simply be a meteorite or something like like either of these events....

that's my point.. those that only know how to download music on a cell phone and microwave a tv dinner are gonna be helpless.

the guys that have never changed their own oil or wouldn't know how to begin a brake job.. some of them are gonna be in trouble. Mind you.. there will be PLENTY of demand for important skill sets.. and not just mechanical or electrical. someones a DR? they'll be fine... they can contribute in their own way, as many will be able to. will surely take a group effort. My comment was geared toward the fact that we would not, for example, be forever without communication. those with communication skills will be on top of that problem soon enough..

not sure I mentioned a pto genset. Looking back at my message.. i'm sure I didn't mention it.

I was talking about a rudimentary hand made/wound genny to make power for a spark gap.. a-la old crank-n-send
