Lets say your over the GCVWR by 500 lbs. Isn't this a manufacturer reccomendation? DOT is concerned with axle weights, or gross trailer right, correct?

as far as DOT is concerned, they can ticket/ fine/ detain your vehicle if you are over this rating. Probably won't for an individual for 500lbs, but probably could. As far as safety, I would probably do it if it, especially if not too far- I've done far worse.

I had occasion to have a chat with a FLDOT officer before I bought my dually, wondering the same thing. While they chase big trucks for other things usually, dually p/u's tend to be ticketed around here for gvwr or gcvwr. This is listed on the door, or available on the 'net. Even if you take a one ton axles/chasis and mount them under a 1/2 ton p/u, the rating on the door is what they go by unless you jump thru some hoops to change the rating on the truck, and re-title it as a one ton, and a bunch more stuff...
The R on the end of the GCVWR is just what it stands for, a RATING. So I would not consider it a S (for suggestion) but just what it is...
Make a mistake and be 500 pounds over and see just what attorney's make out of it for the other side.

Around here with our officers it and the trucks GVWR is all they care about.

Around here it's all in how much you paid when you filled out the registration. The more you pay the more you can haul. If you get into an accident then it's a different story.

Yep, you got it. It ranks up there with the tire placard payload or other truck manufacturers numbers dot isn't concerned with.
The truck manufacturers GCWR is nowhere on the truck nor are there any state or fed requirements for it to be. Its a recommendation only that can be changed by example;; a simple gear ratio change or tranny type change or installing a 6.0 smallblock in place of the little 5.3 engine or other manufacture options.
The only numbers on the trucks fed required certification placard (door tag) are the trucks GVWR and RAWR/FAWR.

In the case of a private use truck pulling a trailer the trucks GCWR is not of concern.
Now if the truck /trailer is in commercial service then a GCW will have to be declared. Example is a 12k GVWR one ton dually pulling a 16k GN flatdeck trailer = a 28k declared GCW operating weight. Notice its not a GCWR.

However your non commercial so its all a mute point unless your state has a requirement for registering a private use truck/trailer with a GCW.

How does one officially determine what a particular truck's GCVWR is if there is nothing on the door to indicate it?

Besides, I heard read it on the internet so it must be true....

The DOT in NY wants your $$$. I just don't want them getting mine. I bought a trailer and it weighs more than I planned. I'm a few hundred over my GCVWR and want to know just in case I would get checked.

Its in the manual. All based on engine, gear, chassis length, ect.
