I recently got a little Hitachi grinder, and it isn't too bad. The switch is a POS, and it is fairly loud, but it is alright. Not as nice as my makita, or 7 inch, but not too bad.

I don't remember how long ago I started this thread, but let me tell you, I can't believe it is still going either. (I solved my grinder issue atleast 8 months ago.)

Ya I know what you mean, when I started it, I wasn't sure if I would be able to fix one of my grinders, and just wanted suggestions of any brands and models that have worked well, and ones that didn't. I ended up using epoxy to fix the old one, and recently added another. I will agree this thread far outlived its usefulness.

I've gone through DeWalts (made in China), Black and Decker (Identical to DeWalt except color and badging), 2-3 different colors from HF, and Porter Cable.
HF has them on sale for $10 right now. If it were convenient I'd buy at least 3 of them as I'm down to my last two grinders but alas I fly to Dublin tomorrow and I don't have anymore baggage weight allowance and don't want to schlep grinders around Ireland and the UK for a month.

The HF is scrap. I really scoured the place for alternative to pricey grinders and the best I have come up with (and really as good as most 100$ + units) is the B&D from Walmart. I have one or 2 that wayyyyy outlast the DeWalts and a few others. Intentionally put one on the bench where we work it like a rented mule thinking would just see how long one lasts, several years of heavy use. Good power, disposable at the price (haven't found the need to toss one yet) but am done with the others. A little trust is in order here and you got only 30 to risk, personally think its the best grinder going in its price range and as good as most others.

You may not be aware....but...BandD is the JUNK line of DeWalt. I've used both and not even close to the same class and durability (and internal construction) though I am sure they share a number of common minor parts.
