Preparing for Sandy

   / Preparing for Sandy #101
I've been living with alternate energy for several years. My off grid system went in in 2006........[snip].....Next I'm making windmills and microhyro. With the addition of those I will have continuous power regardless of the sun. And with that I expect to heat my house for free. Next year I'll install another intertie for my off grid system so that during the summer I can send all my spare power back to the grid.
Last night the power went on and off several times. We watched Netflix on our large screen TV, my two freezers with all our summer garden vegetables never lost power nor did the fridge, well pump or oil burner motor. I can't put a price on what that's worth.

Now THAT is how you prepare for a power outage. Awesome, that is exactly what I'm aiming to have within 10-15 years in the house I haven't built yet. haha.

And that's a fallacy - if it's tap water and a clean tub what's the problem? Put it in a kettle and boil it and it will do for drinking water in a pinch.

It's a choice, since boiling water isn't practical during a power outage. We keep our drinking water elsewhere.

Wife works at Walmart and it was nuts yesterday with everyone buying fuel, camping gear, batteries, water, food etc... Today will be worse when they all want to return that stuff.

It's a choice. We pull fresh water from the well for drinking.

Tig - I think he meant if you had to you could drink water held in a bathtub after boiling it...same for lake or river water...just boil it...and pour it through a coffee filter and you can live....Most humans cannot survive more than 3 days without water...much longer without food ...but not water , so everyone should know in an emergency any water can be boiled and strained and used as drinking water...

Yep, but I do expect some great deals on "never used" generators!

Hi Brin, there seems to be consensus that bath water can be made potable by boiling. The confusion seems to be over the meaning of the word potable.
I'm clear on the meaning in the context I chose.

I dont know Bob, to do that, your near death anyway I guess:laughing: I have heard of people doing this to survive, but what about the ones that do it and say it's for their" health"?? Hope I never find my self in the position to make that choice:D

I'm sure if you were to boil it, it would be fine. :)
The kitchen may not smell very nice after that, and your tea will never taste the same.
