Thought I would share some pictures of me and my cousins cutting up an uprooted tree after Hurricane Sandy:

If any safety violations are pictured, it's not my fault. :D

Excellent photos and documentation of the event. It's just amazing what that tractor/backhoe/loader will do.
Plus you saved yourself some serious $$ in cleanup costs.

Do hurricanes ever take trees that are already uprooted and plant them back in the ground? Seems unfair that the process only goes one way.

Well, I had a dogwood out front that was leaning after Irene, so after Sandy came through I used the loose wet soil to let me pull it straight again. But then, it's not a very big tree...I don't know if it will work completely yet, as the ground was wetter after Irene. If there's still tension on the strap come spring, I may just leave a hose on it for a while until it loosens up.

Back in 1955 we had 2 hurricanes in our area, the first one took over a good size willow tree on our property. As a young fellow then I started to cut limbs off so the neighbor could cut his lawn. Later that season we had another and it stood that tree upright again. It didn't go back completely as it was but it survived for several years. It looked worse than a bad hair cut because of all the hacking I did on it.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

Was the tree diseased?

I'm really not sure what was wrong with it, but it had some rot. I would say it was about 2/3 alive.

I don't think so.

It looks like an apple tree to me. If so, that rot is characteristic of apple trees that old. Makes great
smoking wood or firewood.
