Two Cycle Fuel Mixing ratios.

When I bought my Stihl blowers and saws, they offered to double the warranty if I bought 4 cans of their Moto-Mix, which is a 50:1 non-ethanol gasoline. I must say the equipment starts and runs well after very long non-use periods. Yes its very expensive, but when I need a saw I need it NOW not when I can finally get it started. I've seen a slightly cheaper version of this fuel at Home Depot under another name. What I wound up doing was to add my regular 50:1 gas/oil mix to the Moto-Mix to top off the cans as I used them up.

A coworker does lawn equipt repair in his spare time, recomended 50:1 synthetic for all 2 strokes, mine all seam to start better and run better on it. He also stores his premix in old liquid laundry deturgent jugs, the push button dispenser eliminates the need for funnels and is easy to control flow. He said his jug is over 5 years old and has had no problems. Just be sure to remove the lable and relable as flamable, premix fuel.

Great tip about the laundry jugs, thanks. Will use it for motor oil on the little hondas n such, too!

Two stroke oil mixing is another example of where "there can be too much of a good thing."

Rotax which builds two stroke small aircraft engines warns of engine failure caused by detonation due to lowered fuel octane if excessive oil is used. Plug and port fouling too.

Good thread that you started, Gale. I would guess that most of us are not experts on the subject and just grew up experiencing these things. In my case I have 40 year old Homelite chain saws that recommended 1:16....then got newer saws and blower that wanted 1:32....then a Stihl Brush trimmer at 1:40. A couple years ago I treated myself to a Farm Boss MS290 at 1:50 ( a bugger to get started) and a Stihl blower at 1:50. I was going crazy trying to keep fresh mixes. So now, I think I'll just used the 1:50 Ultra Stihl product for everything.

Another thing.....disposing of "old" mixes......I used to dump a gallon or so in my F-250 to used it up. Now I don't have to do that anymore.

The old 16:1 saws where pre 2 stroke mix oil. They used 8 ounces of 30w non detergent motor oil for the mix. After 2 stroke mix came out, it was possible to run 32:1 in the 16:1 units. I cannot comfirm or deny if it is true, but 2 stroke engine builders say that running a rich mix, IE, running 40:1 in a saw designed for 50:1 can cause them to run lean.

I use the Stihl HP Ultra II. I mix a gallon at a time with premium gas. I think the synthetic oil smells good and the conventional stinks/ puts of more emissions. Before I started using the HP ultra II I noticed my clothes would always stink of exhaust fumes. Also Stihl recommends using HP Ultra II in the 4 mix engines.

I have been using Amsoil 100:1 synthetic in every 2 stroke I have except my hard use chainsaws. I love the stuff. I have also gone to none ethanol gas in all my small engines.

Lucky guy. We can not get non ethanol fuels here. A law was passed in 2010 that all gas has to be 10% ethanol and all diesel has to be 2% minimum. For a while we could get non ethanol at marinas, the co-op, and a few airports but now they all run E10 except the airports which did away with gas for just 100LL aviation fuel. I run it in my 2 stroke stuff now.

I also use Arnold One Mix for all my stuff. Its a synthetic one mix ratio for all my 32:1 40:1 and 50:1 stuff.

I run Stihl Ultra with 93 octane in all my 2 strokes. All mixed at 50:1. No carbon fouling or gumming up of carbs. I generally only mix enough for a month or 2 at a time. I'm pretty sure that the Ultra oil has a fuel stabilizer mixed in as well.

I see where some if you are running oils made for different types of 2 stroke engines. It is very important that you run an oil designed for an air-cooled engine.
