Funny, I'm actually thinking about going back to diesel for my primary truck. I've really got the hots for the upcoming Cummins/Aisin combo. I'd much rather have it than a direct injected 6.2 liter in a 3/4 or 1 ton truck. Don't get me wrong my 6.0 V8 does what I need and a direct injected would do even better but I still don't think it would do as well as the new diesels at pulling a heavy load. My 6.4 Powerstroke was a mean pulling machine and there are definitely times when I miss it.

Re: GM announced the beginning of the end of the diesel light truck today

I agree the diesel would be a tough sell. Especially with motors like the Ford Eco Boost making diesel like power on gas. Its only a $600 option when a diesel would be $6000.

I like the idea but the dollars and cents dont work out.

Chris

true but GM didn't come out with anything CLOSE to an Eco-boost engine. ain't no way that 4.3 is gonna rival that engine. it'll compete with the 3.7 I suspect.

I dont see the issue.

If you can honestly say you work a diesel truck, then a medium duty (F-450/ 4500) or larger, will serve you even better.

Gov't Motors for ya!
How much would a diesel up grade cost without all the gov't mandated smog chit cost? (include engineering & design, testing)

Re: GM announced the beginning of the end of the diesel light truck today

If GM built a diesel that didn't need replacement injectors often and they used to build a transmission that worked and rear ends that held the axles while going down the road. Maybe the diesel would stil lbe a option with them.
Since 1990 with another man have driven a ford 250 4X4 pick-up pulling a 30' trailer. The truck went 350 thousand miles with out the engine being repaired now retired from high way use still being driven on the farm .
The new ford pick-up 250 4X4 has 250 thousand is still on highway. Very little maintance other than lube and normal wear adjustments.
Fill the truck with diesel and drive with out worries until tank is again empty.
Listening to the injectors go click click click and know it will do so until trip is over.
I have forgotten how many gas trucks driven and 100 thousand about wore out. Could this be the reason diesels are being dis-continued. Not enough trading of vehicles.
The new trucks requiring the additives additional taxes and having to pay a extra 5 cents a gal. on the fuel for high way maintance since the heavier pick-ups are tearing up the highways. But the 18 whl'ers are exempt .
could be reducing the new purchases.
But my 3X4 ton 4X4 Dodge is paid for and runs good will continue to drive until no longer have to drive.

Re: GM announced the beginning of the end of the diesel light truck today

The folks I know who really work their trucks are moving away from diesels. Unless you're pulling some really serious weight all the time, it really doesn't make sense to own one. 8 speed trannies, 400 hp gassers. How much power do you need....
