The Mrs. bought me a hat for my birthday a few months back, the kind George Utley wore on the Newhart show, red plaid wool with the bow knot tied on top. I've taken to wearing it on our weekend walks with the dog...it does the job. In winter I usually put something to the noggin, a hood or a wool cap of some kind but usually brimless.

Its rare that I be seen without one. In the summer it a ball cap or a straw hat, winter its my beaver hat. I get a tan line across my forhead from being outside in the sun with a hat on.

My daughter got me a cap for Christmas. As I have gotten older, I wear a brimmed hat in the summer and often some sort of cap in the winter, when I was younger I rarely wore one.

I have to where a hat since I'm outside a lot it would take mere minutes before the dome became burnt.

I wear a ventilated Hat when out doing tractor work or gardening, and maybe on occasions I'll wear a smokers hat when going out somewhere fancy, But not much on everyday wearing them, simply because I think they make you prematurely loose hair, Back in the '90s I worked a young man was in his mid 20's, He always wore a cap, he had long hair hanging out from all around it ,one day on the way to work he was setting in the rear seat of truck , I happen to get a glimpse of him through the rear view with his hat off while scratching his head, I was amazed on How Bald his head was on top when having so much hair hanging out, Needless to say he carried a nickname of Baldy from that day on:D ....... How many of you can relate to this?;) and is it due to wearing a hat/cap?

Hard to say....early twenties oftentimes is when folks predisposed to it might begin balding. I remember in the service we had to wear ball caps all the time. Made my hair get greasy quicker but I still got most of it all these years later.

I think it is common belief that wearing a hat causes baldness but only because most bald guys wear a hat. I have read that wearing a hat doesnt cause you to loose hair. Heredity is major cause. Stress is another reason hair falls out but normally will grow back when cause of stress is remedied. One of my daughters hair started falling out in clumps and doctors diagnosed it as stress related. We found out that she was stressed out from school and once that was reduced her hair came back rich and thick as ever. The heredity doesnt always take on every sibling either. I am pretty lacking in hair on top but brother has plenty. One of my sons is fairly bald but other one is thick with hair. Come to think of it, the bald one has always worn hats while the one with hair never did.

I rarely do, but will when its cold and often wear a baseball hat when in the sun for a long time or on my boat. I do tend to wear a hard hat with a wire face shield and built in muffs when doing any tractor work.

I go for function, not vanity.
Winter, cold, sunless, knit cap
very cold, windy, leather cap with wool inside, cheek strap
Summer, hot, windy, brim hat with holes in crown, leather chin strap
Summer, hot, not so windy, some sort of brim hat
windy, not too much sun..baseball cap, gimme
hunting turkey, deer, cold windy, camouflage pullover just showing eyes and mouth.
hunting dove, baseball cap, sit in shade, helps with sun when out and about picking up birds
Overcast, little sun, whatever is around and best for temperature
Summer in the shop or not too much sun but sweating a lot... a do rag for the noggin keeps sweat out of eyes.

Balding and need cover from sun for sure. Also, tops of ears to keep the dermatologist's pocket knife in the pocket.

The count of my hats has a direct correlation opposite of the count of my hairs.

I always wear a ball cap of one kind or another...have to hide the bald spots that are taking over residence on my fat head. Ive never actually purchased any of these hats... i get them for fre from one place or another. its all advertising.

I always put on one of three different hats when I go out the door. I've been following this routine for so long, it comes natural.

I tend to wear hats more during the winter, but I do have a hat for sun protection for when the summer sun is blazing. A couple of my hats need protection from the wife, as she is of the opinion that they have have exceeded their pull date. :D

Same here, its more function than form, I also like the new windproof materials for winter use.....lets not forget the Filson tincloth for those rainy day brookies!

FWIW, male baldness is actually genetically X-linked. That means it is linked to your mother's father, not your own father. For instance, my dad has lost a great bit of hair. I'm 37 and have a full shock of really thick stuff. But when I look at pics of my grandfather on my mom's side, he had lots of hair.

Anyway, about hats: I always have a cap on when working outside, and when I'm out and about I wear a Indiana Jones style hat or a 1920's-ish driving hat. When you wear glasses it's nice to keep away sun glare and rain drops.

When I had hair I thought bald people who wore hats were vain and hiding it.

Now that I am pretty bald, I have found out that hair serves several functions: sun protection, warmth, wind protection, etc. A hat helps to replace the protection for the top of my head that went away with my hair.

So my belief is that hats do not produce baldness, but baldness encourages wearing a hat.

I always thought this was a cool way to wear a hat.
