Running under a heavy load will require a better spark than running with no load. Seems that the spark has a harder time jumping the spark plug gap when the engine is working hard.

This tractor has stalled/stopped working multiple times under heavy load. Hopefully new wires and cleaning the points will fix things. If not I will add more new parts. Thanks for the info!

Do you have a hot wire going to the coil key on?

If yes

Is there any moisture inside the cap?

If no

Are the points opening?

To answer your question Napa echlin points are good.

Ok guys. Here are pictures of the distributor in all of it's glory. Can someone link to a good how-to guide for cleaning/testing points? My random Google links are vague.

UPDATE

THINK I FOUND IT -- a piece of the coil itself had burned off and was stuck to the thin copper "spring thing" in the distributor. So now I need to source the 12V coil -- either locally or online. Oh, and also a front distributor cap -- check out the broken section.

Question -- would you still clean the points? I don't even know what the points are and all of the YouTube videos and pictures I have seen don't help much.

I would do a complete tune up on it. You already did plugs. I would get points, condenser, wires, a cap (which yours is cracked), and a rotor. It looks like someone put a screw in the rotor. Napa would be a good place to get a coil.

Thanks for the help. I will go to NAPA tomorrow and load up on parts. It will be interesting to see what they *don't* carry. I will be cool if they have the front mounted 12V coil -- I thought that would be hard to find.

I think I am going to buy this tune up kit. Sure, I already have the spark plugs but I will keep them as spares. This is half the price of trying to buy the parts individually. My only problem is I wish I could find all of this locally -- I work near a few tractor places but, for example, no one sold the plug wires. I wonder if I could piece it all together.

I checked online with Napa they only have a listing on plug wires. They are universal, you have to cut them to fit and put the terminal ends on them. I think they would have most of the stuff but they may have to look it up in a catalog.

The 12v conversions I have seen still use a 6v coil because you have a ballast resistor.

A New Holland dealer may have most of the stuff in stock. I have a customer that likes Just 8N's. Just8Ns - Ford Tractor Parts and Restoration

There are different ways of converting to 12 volt. I have not done it but I think there is an option to either keep the 6 volt coil or switch to a 12 volt but the 2 methods have dependancies on other parts.

You need to know which aproach was used for yours so that you get the right parts.

I wish I could beore specific but I don't really have the knowledge.

Mine has a 12V coil -- they exist in front distributor box form.

Check here...
These do not require external resistors.

Maybe I'm wrong about the coil.
