Midwest Alert (NE, IA, KS) - fraud in steel buildings

He did the same thing to us, took off with our deposit this past July 2012 and changed his phone numbers etc. We knew North Dakota was getting bad with scam artists but had to find out the hard way.- We did track him down, he lives in colorado now, he is still running under the double diamond name with variations. You are correct, he is a smooth talker. Here is his address in colorado, we were not able to get a phone number- 1418 washburn st erie co 80516. We have filed police reports, but they said tracking him down will be difficult.

Just wanted to warn folks there is a guy named Dan Miller who is going around eastern Nebraska, western Iowa, and Kansas selling steel buildings. He has used the company name of Double Diamond Construction (don't know if he's changed it lately). He talks a great talk, takes a deposit for materials, and then never does anything.

He has done his research - he knows steel buildings, building systems, and what customers need and want. He is technically savvy. He is a great talker. He just never follows through with anything once he cashes the check.

Unfortunately, I have first-hand knowledge of how he operates. Don't want to revisit old wounds, but I wasn't hurt nearly as bad as what others have been.

Yesterday I received a call from the Sheriff's Dept in Mills County Iowa. They are trying to prosecute him for several felonies - he has bilked many people out there for tens of thousands of dollars.

His mother is a business partner. They are actively advertising steel buildings on Craigslist (as of Dec 3).

I've talked with some local construction guys around here, and they said the business was legitimate earlier. Not sure what the deal is now, but the Deputy told me that he is going around taking money from lots of people now. He was in Iowa a few months back, and the Deputy said he is now operating in Kansas.

I'm just trying to spread the word here - you don't want to have any dealings with this guy. If you have - get in touch with the Mills County Sheriff's Office so they can document your situation for their case. I am hesitant to post something like this on a public forum, but the size and scale of fraud that the Deputy told me is going on - that makes my blood boil. It's gotta stop.

Sorry for your loss of funds. Hope you are able to get some back. I do have to ask though, did you not check for references? Why did you go with someone from out of town? Maybe you would have fared better going with someone local. They may charge a little more but at least they have a business reputation to think about.

jewles47,

Thank you for the info. My name is Steven and I have just won a judgement aginst this company for unpaid wages. This will help me in my search to recover my money. The ND states attorny will find it useful. As well as the IRS. He is a rip off artist. I have spent a year trying to get him. Now I can finish my quest. He does the same to employees as he does to customers. He is a fraud. He knows the words but he is not an Ironworker. On my site I did all the work, ran the crew and dealt with the project bosses. I went home for my scheduled days off, he ducked me for my checks, and then said he was firing me, and dissappeared. Anyone in North Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas And Colorado needs to spread the word about him. He is being sought by law enforcement in Iowa. So , beware.

2-25-2013 This outfit Double Diamond Construction and a person with the name Dan Miller is still doing business in ND and recently got an advance payment from a farmer in Edgeley. ND. This Double Diamond Construction company came highly recommended by a company called MCR Steel Buildings, believed to be a ficticious name for Metal Construction Resources, LLC out of Denver, CO owned by a Rob Morton. The farmer paid for contract amounts in advance and Double Diamond Construction did not set up the pay the subcontractors nor pay them for their work. The MCR Steel Buildings , Metal Construction Resources, LLC, was also paid for the metal building and insulation directly but has failed to pay even one cent for the $18,000 plus worth of insulation used on the project. It was also stated that they did not pay for the steel erector in full either. By Metal Building Expert

I ordered a piece of equipment once from a company in Oklahoma. Paid for it with a bank wire transfer. Delivery date came and went and no equipment. Called the company several times over the next few wks and they kept giving excuses. Finally they stopped answering the phone. I called the bank where I had transfered the money and explaned to them what was going on. The bank called the company and they answered the phone first ring. We had a nice three way chat with promises of me recieveing my equipment within the next week. Of course that didnt happen so my next call was to the Oklahoma Attorney Generals office. Then the company started calling me, they shipped my equipment, but the shipment was still short of all the materials ordered. A little research on the good old net and I found several other folks that had also been ripped off. I got all of their contact info and called the AG office again. This time charges where filed, the man and wife team where convicted of internet fraud and fined $100,000 each with several years of probation added on. Their business was closed and their website taken down. Didnt cost me a dime in attorney fees. Funny thing was, just a few monhs later while searching the net, I came across another site that was selling the same equipment, the site looked very similar to the original site and one phone call to the company and guess who answered the phone, yep the same lady that tried to screw me and several others before. Since I am the type that will hold a grudge forever, I made another call to the AG office and that site too was taken down. The couple was again arrested and I am pretty sure this time they spent some jail time. I still do a search for similar type equipment sales and if I find them doing business on the internet again, they had better be on the up and up.
