Are hand saws as rare as dial phones?

A company over here called Bahco have released last year, a saw handle, you just buy a replacement saw blade so it saves you money & the handle is more beefier & ergonomic than a standard saw too.

Geko - is that blade Bahco's own design, or an industry standard mount ?

How do you sharpen one? I've never done it but have an old saw that could use it!

A handsaw is just like any other saw. You need to keep the teeth the same height, the set the same amount on both sides,
and the angle of the file on the face of the tooth the same.
Your best bet is to find a shop that does handsaw sharpening for carpenters. Most contractors still use a hand saw in tight places or to cut off rafter tails, etc. There are a lot of old motor driven handsaw filing machines around as well and spring loaded anvils to make the tooth set.
Check with a local, family owned hardware store, or call some local contractors and ask where they get theirs done.
You can do it with a file yourself but will probably end up with a saw that cuts crooked or worse than it does now.
The old wise saying about a handsaw, or any saw for that matter, is: "Let the saw do the work" In other words don't force it.

When i started farming from scratch on a 1/2 section of bare land 25 years ago I build a 32 x 16' addition to the mobile home, a 42 x 32 x 14' workshop and a 32 x 32' barn .(handbuild all the rafters for them as well) using only a handsaw for sawing everything including the plywood.
I had a brandnew skillsaw but the thing burned out on the first rip i made,in disgust i grabbed the handsaw and never looked back.
I still use a handsaw today if i have to build something, i also use it when building furniture.
My brother gave me a new skillsaw a couple years ago(he is a commercial contractor), i seldom use it cause i can't seem to make a square cut out of hand with it.(i hate the noise it makes too)
i use/buy only saws with hardened teeth and just buy a new one when they get dull, they last a long time cause i'm only on my third saw.

always the last cut you need to do and batteries are flat, the blade needs changing - so you grab a handsaw and off you go.

And find the saw is dull!:D

I do have more than a few hand woodworking tools and will use them as required. Much prefer the good electric stuff with sharp blades though for accuracy and ease of use.

I bought a Shark Pullsaw about 15 years ago and haven't used a push saw since. It get used about once a month or more. I gave up on battery powered tools.

Good Afternoon Bruce,
Those are some very nice hand tools !

I have some small hand saws I use for cabinet work, flush cutting plugs etc... very handy. I still do own some carpentry hand saws but they get used infrequently. :) Still they are nice to have for certain jobs ! ;)

The hand saw I alway keep at the ready is the older version of the Stanley Fat Max.

Oh.. I still have a dial phone at the cabin too.

Doesn't it cost as much to have a hand saw professionally re-sharpened as is does to buy a new one?

I have several Disson Saws and use them a couple times a month. Sharpen and set them myself. My dad used to have a hardware store and taught me when I was around 15. Practiced a lot before he would let me do an actual customer's saw.
