What snake is this?

HaHaHaaaa! Very funny! Glad it WASN'T poison for the kid's sake.LOL! don-ohio:laughing:
Now, I get to tell my snake story. A man and his sons, ages about 9 through 16 were tearing down a house near my place of employment. One of the younger kids was chasing a snake . I tried to caution him that the snake might be posionous. The child looked at me like I was lower than pond scum, and in a very gruff voice he said, He ain't poisonous! He already done bit me four times!!!

Looks like a bull snake. Probably a close relative. Non poisonous and they will try to imitate a rattler.

How do I know? We have many around our hose on the southern side in the spring/summer/fall. I've gotten pretty good at taking care of them. ;)

We also have gardeners with red stripes on them that seem quite aggressive. *shrug*. I guess that's the price to pay to live on a ravine that's mostly rocks and southern facing.

It looks like a corn snake to me....their basic colors change/adapt to their environment. they are in a large family of snakes including king snakes... and rat snakes (AFAIK)

We always called em Corn Snakes too, some are real close to milk snakes in looks not sure if they are different species or just local coloration that got them different names.

Been a while since I seen any, last time I saw any I was on tractor mowing, & didn't seem them in high grass & chucked up 3 of them mating :( now the moles are sure taking a tole on the yard.

We would call it a bull snake around here. That's a good snake to have under the house they eat rodents and are harmless to humans. They will rattle their tail against their body and act fierce if surprised but that's a defensive act just let them be and they will go back to doing their job of eating mice.

No,you DO have venomous snakes in Central OH,just not nearly as many as Southern, and Eastern OH. You have copperheads and the occasional rattlesnake. don-ohio :)^)

You know, you're right...I checked the ODDR website and we do have copperheads, and they don't seem to be rare. I had always just heard the mantra "no venomous snakes in central Ohio" from people who were obviously wrong.

Pit Vipers have a flat triangular head. Non venomous snakes have heads that are more elongated. I really don't want to be that close to them to check their head shape. I'm not afraid of them but respect them. They serve a vital purpose in keeping rodents in check.

Ahhh...
So The Bull Snake and the Gopher Snake are closely related.

So, I was right... more or less...

I've been hoping that some gopher snakes would find their way back to my neighborhood to help with my mole and gopher problem.
