A floor jack is a good idea if the culvert is big enough. I once took my generator and a grinder out the mile to one of my culverts and just cut the squashed end off at a 45 degree angle that made it look better anyway.

I live on a corner and the culvert get abused a lot by heavy trucks, kids being wreckless. It stops up due to leaves in the fall because of the collapsed culvert. I went out there with a long breaker bar and pried it up enough to get a small jack into it.i opened it up quite wide. The cutting idea might work here as well. I'll give that some thought. -kid

Here too. I was told to pound sand, and that is being polite. I inquired as to permits, none were pulled. One would have hoped the county would come to investigate, no such luck.

After you repair the culvert, you could place some brightly colored fence post since there was high grass to show them the way and post a sign to stay on the path.

Two key words..."truck" and "driver". From what I've seen in the last 35 years of working with them, the bad to good ratio is about 10-1.

I deal with them everyday . They have always got a better idea . Your 10-1 is a higher score than I give .

A set of "Burma Shave" type signs might ensure that numbnuts don't do it again. Is the culvert on the right of way for your road? If a road is state maintained in NC, culverts installed for driveways in the right of way become the property of the state and are maintained by the DOT. This was per the district engineer when I contacted him regarding the mess they made in front of my house during a repaving project.

Mike, I would pursue the construction foreman also, they have the equipment and should be able to repair it quick enough....IF they take responsibility.

It seems like every month a truck will come down our road (signs posted "DEAD END" at the entrance) they will back into his small driveway, and either take out the mailbox or damage the asphalt and concrete pads he has there for a driveway and run-off control. NOT ONE has stopped to tell him, he runs them down and so far, each company has paid for repairs.

We live at the end of the road and the road has a large turn around area which is covered in grass and moss because it is seldom used. A few years a go I heard a heavy diesel driving up the road. :confused3: I could see a semi hauling roof trusses on the road. Hmmmm, I had not ordered any trusses but I am sure I could use a free set. :laughing::laughing::laughing: I walked down to the road to talk to the driver and long story short is he is lost. He had wrong directions and he turned off the main road about a mile sooner than he should have. Ironically, the parcel he was trying to get too was only a few hundred yards away as the crow flies but not how the truck drives. :laughing::laughing::laughing:

The driver wanted to BACK down a 1/2 mile road that curves this way and that, has plenty of ditches, mailboxes, culverts and a gate. :shocked: All he had to do was use the turning area and turn around. :confused3: I had to be a bit forceful to get him to use the turnaround. Now, I know he does not want to get the truck stuck but if he had walked around for about 10 seconds he would have seen the gravel and known the turning area was safe. I can't imagine anyone with a sound mind thinking they could have backed up a semi 1/2 mile down that narrow road vs turning around... He did turn the truck around which messed up the gravel a bit since he did not want to back up and move forward but it was not a big deal. The logging trucks created less of a mess than this guy...

I have not had any culverts smashed, but do have a corner the neighbors like to cut short and knock the corner post over. They like to steal the post too. I have found a source for "scrap" concrete railroad ties and as soon as I get some spare time, I will be planting those on the property corners. Good luck with your culvert.
