I've had enough of poison ivy, oak , sumac ... Until I get a few goats around here , has anyone been successful in eradicating these plants from your property ? If so how? And what are the side effects ? Thanks

I've beat back the poison ivy with relentless use of Roundup. There will be collateral damage, but it's worth it. Be relentless.

I use a mix of round up,generic, brush &weed killer and 2-4-d,it even kills the dirt for 3or4mos. Make it strong. Double strength.

Young poison ivy can be killed with 2,4D. Add a few drops of Dawn dish soap to cut the surface tension of the ivy for a 1 or 2 gallon sprayer. Only the broadleafs are killed with 2,4D and your grasses will continue growing. Air temperatures typically should be under 85 degrees so the 2,4D does not volatize. As the season goes on and the plants get larger, your options get more limited to glyphosate type products that kill everything that is actively growing. Add a few drops of dish soap or a crop oil to any spray you use on poison ivy to help get the chemical to kill it. Good luck.

Stuff in the link was a concentrate mixing of 12 tablespoons per gallon.

The link says the 32-ounce container will make 5 gallons, so the 12 tablespoons/gallon of water * 0.5 fluid ounces/tablespoon * 5 gallons of water = 30 ounces, close enough.

The recommended application rate of Crossbow (34.4% 2,4-D and 16.5% triclopyr) for poison oak and ivy is 2 fluid ounces per gallon of water (http://www.cdms.net/ldat/ld02H006.pdf.

Crossbow is expensive, +/1 $150 or so for 2.5 gallons (320 ounces), or $0.47/ounce. However, if you have much to spray, Crossbow is a lot less expensive ($4.70/5 gallon mix) than the linked herbicide ($28/5 gallon mix).

Price 41% glyphosphate at Tractor Supply or other farm store. About $30/gallon or $50/2.5 gallon.
