Looking at a bx2230 with 861 hours, still owned by the original owner (he bought it brand new). When I asked how frequently he changed the oil, he stated "once, at 500 hours. Won't need another one until 1000 hours".

I know these engines are pretty tough, but could 500 hours on original oil and filter be a deal breaker? What type of permanent damage could Be done? In forgot to ask about the air filter. I'm assuming the same. Otherwise, the tractor looks like a freshly minted penny in pictures (haven't seen in person yet. 5 hours away).

Thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

What kind of money is he asking and what does it come with?

That would not scare me at all. Both my dozers have 500hr manufacturer reccomend oil change intervals. So thats when i change. One of em has 5400 hrs on it and still does not need oil added to it between oil changes. Whats the recomended oil change on this tractor?

So he missed the 50 hour oil change and once a 100 hours there after. I would be afraid of it. Look down inside the oil cap with a flashlight and see what it looks like.

I wonder what the oil change interval is on a Kubota on a reefer unit?

$6000. 60" mid mower, 4x4, new tires, new batt, canopy. No loader, no other implements. I think it's recommended every 100 or 200 hours.

Pull an oil scan on it if you have doubts and buy it if the oil scan shows good.

He's gone 5 times past the factory crankcase oil change interval. Obviously didn't read or just ignored the operators manual. Probably never changed any other fluid either... particularly the HST juice. I'd keep looking.

He probably thought you could go 1500hrs on the hst oil:laughing:

It'd sure scare me off .........

Someone with such a scant regard for maintenance probably has the same approach to operating the tractor.....drive it like you stole it , no warm up time, instant shut down from hot, max the revs out.........or leave idling for hours on end....?

It makes you think what he actually put in the thing when he changed oil, afterall (in his view) it likely makes no difference as it all ends up black soon enough...........860hrs sure gives a lot of opportunity for (ab)use.....& leaving the first oil change until 500hrs has left all the contaminants from breaking in swirling around in the oil flow......strong possibility the air filter is clogged & the engine is also on its way to be dusted......the coolant has never been changed & the engine water galleries are clogged/suffering from electrolysis.........greasing the zerks.....HST/Hydro Fluid ..etc?

Their smaller capacity sumps are one good reason small engines & CUT's have greater frequency of oil changes, only the foolhardy ignore the manufacturers recommendations....
IMO walk away & let the guy keep polishing the tractor as it's well on the way to becoming suitable only for a static display...........

IMHO, I would not worry about it. When is the last time you saw or heard of engine failure due to old oil?
