Neighbor called the Law on me for shooting

There are those who will move to the country because they can't throw their weight around in the city. Trying to do so in some rural areas often gets them laughed at. I've had 3 LEO visits in 12 yrs when shooting. No 30-rd mags, no .50 cals, no tannerite. Invariably a new neighbor would be curious about the cadence of shots, and the officers would let them know we're shooting safely and lawfully.

The LEOs would ask if we were using drugs or alcohol, take our word for it that we were CPL-holders, and compliment my berms in a very few minutes. We'd spend several more discussing the local deer & turkey populations with them and where we're all looking to buy land 'up North' with no neighbors to ever complain. I'm between a large city and an exurban town, two miles or less from either. Between frogs & songbirds I can hear a marching band 1 mi away and, much to my liking, an elementary school playground 1/4 mi over my shoulder & across the road when shooting or on another calm day.

Lucky for me, neighbors on 3 sides either hunt, shoot, or practice with their carry pieces. Their tractors can be louder than their 'shoots', but we're mutually polite as to the hours we're making noise & there is 'peace in the valley', if you will. Anti-gunners might hear a practice session or orchard sprayer once a week and say it happens 'all the time'. There's no satisfying their values. They could just understand/accept the environments they moved into. btw: I'm the NPR guy around here (spying on the left? :)) Not to be political, but I find that Republicans tend to be very tolerant neighbors.

On new year's nite we can hear 20-rounders emptying, probably AKs, till one o'clock and coming from closer to either town than we are. Silence is transitory. Reality is 24/7.

My across the road neighbor is the NPR guy too. He is on 80 acres. He drinks and shoots clay targets. Was a dem, but not anymore. Funny how some life experiences and maturity of your education changes you. LOL

No, you don't live in the country. You live where it used to be country before a bunch of lots were subdivided and houses went up.

"Clemsonfor, if you live on less than one acre of property, I'll be willing to bet you can hit more than one of your neighbor's houses with a thrown baseball. If you can, that means you don't live in the country. Sorry, in that case, you're either urban or suburban.

I would tend to agree with you both. I do not technically live in the country although 150 yards from my house is woods (i dont own) but you can walk several miles before you hit the first road or house.

I can hit 2 houses.

My home is sanwitched between 2 houses that are both early 1900s one may be late 1800s?? My home was built in 1949, there has not been a lot in my small town divided and sold in years that i know of. Before my lot was divided off from the adjacent lot by my neighbors granddad for his dad to build my current home there was goats grazed across my property and his. He owns about 2.5 acres now so he had about 3.5 before mine was cut off.

We live about 15 miles from the edge of the closest town that has more than 4k people in it. One town 7 miles away is about 3500people. The other large town im talking about is 30k people.

I guess you could call it suburban?? the newest house in town i think is a trailer that was just put up any other trailers are at least 20 years old and there is only a few of them. Town limit is 1mile diameter circle give or take. Most homes are older than the 70s at the latest and i think there is something like 50 homes in the town limits.

It has country feel although its not country by what i consider it or what most of you would. I do on the other hand own 131 acres i just dont live on it :-(

When we timbered our land, one of the "neighbors" called the cops. Seems like they did not think timber trucks should be running on a public road.:laughing::laughing::laughing: Course the real problem was that we were cutting trees. The twits who called live on a couple acres of woods, that required trees to be cut to build their house and trees cut down to make lumber to build their house. Some people are dumb as a box of rocks.

Later,
Dan

As a forester this one really gets me!!!

WHAT the heck does it matter if the trees cut on your place build your house or someone elses?? All they did is increase the cost of thier home??? They really are stupid, i can go to lowes here and pick up building lumber (for decks at least) and i personally know that most of that wood came from within 60 miles of that LOWES.

Howdy,
After time, they should have a clue what goes on. I might not be shooting daily, weekly or monthly, but, when I do shoot, its always a bunch. It echoes through the valley. I even had a friend about 1 mile away asked if I was shooting last week. He was upset, because it sounded like fun, and he wasn't there.
The properties here are all large. Next door, 192 acres, 56 acres, 384 acres, 718 acres. The little town population is 154. We have a post office.

ammunition prices need to come back down too.

We just built our house a year ago on 16 acres. Maybe my house is just well built or well insulated, I don't know, but I can't even hear anything inside my house when my son is out target practicing or my neighbors are cutting down trees. I can barely hear the lawn mower inside my house except when it gets up close to the house. But I moved to the country because I wanted space and peace and quiet. I also want to be able to shoot off a few rounds if I want to also. I respect my neighbors and they respect me.

I had the law called on me for shooting. The LEO said that it was unlawful for to fire a weapon within 100 yrds of a dwelling, including my own.

The neighbor who called had a Rottweiler that had been harrassing me and others, and for some reason, he decided that day to take up residence outside my patio, and forbid me to leave my own house.

I yelled to go, he just growled. I tossed some firecrackers his way, and I was astonished to see he didn't even move any of his paws, only the skin on his back jumped, like a fly had landed.

I gave it a few minutes, and when I tried to leave again, he was still there, so I grabbed my .22LR pistol, and fired some shots that would toss dirt on him, and he scrammed. The neighbors said I was trying to shoot their dog.

The LEO let me slide, but gave me a stern lecture about "you'd be better off shooting your neighbor, since people like dogs better than people." Also, "if I come back here again, you better be bloody if you have fired that weapon."

Violation of the leash laws and even the fact that one of their pit bulls actually bit me did not get me anywhere.

I eventually went after that Rotty with manual hedge trimmers, but unbeknownst to me, he was going after a female jogger, not me. She was so impressed that I "saved her" she said she and the rest of the neighbors would handle that little dog matter from now on, and I should no longer worry about it. They DID and I didn't!

Every time they get a new pit bull or Rotty, it disappears. I have nothing to do with that, so I figure the rest of the community is still being true to that pretty jogger's word.

... A year or so ago the sheriff department blew up something in the dump which is a at least 3-5 miles away. That explosion rattled windows at our house. They said they used a bit too much boom boom.:laughing::laughing::laughing:...

Quotes from Highlander:

Sunda Kastagir: "Boom-boom. A big strong man like you shouldn't be afraid of a little boom-boom."

I think living in the country is SO quiet that any noise made is louder than it really is
you take all that city noise and you barely here a lawn mower or even a jackhammer doesn't seem loud
but out in the boonies in the spring when I have my windows opened up for some nice fresh air I can hardly get to sleep with all those darn tree frogs chirping
Our neighborhood consists of the narrow (250-700 ft) by long (1800-2500 ft) lots that make anywhere from 5-15 acres
now our houses are staggered by about 300-500 ft but on the weekends with 4 neighbors teaching concealed carry classes it does have some rumble in the air
do I care??? NO I think everyone can make some noise now and then just do it with a stopping point in mind not an all day-er
We have horses and they can be about 400 ft from where they are shooting and they hardly look up now
they get used to it why can't people get use to it
