Most of this Rant is about food. I was trying to convince myself that it was just me, prices were not that bad or going up by insane amounts.
The news just showed that most things are up an average of 6 to 10 percent.
One thing that I use to buy is frozen pies, they have gone up by $1.00 across the board. Little frozen Pot Pies, .59 to .69.
Fresh fruit & Veggies are out of sight price wise.

Car & Truck batteries appear to be up by about $20.

Yet our Government with its phony accounting system says Inflation is at a stand still.

You are so right, prices are up and a pound is no longer a pound, lots of coffee is now 12 oz. boxes are slightly larger with less inside!

and the 20 pack "cube" of soda instead of the case of 24. Yep less product and more price.

I remember my first job pumping gas. The price on the pump was $0.28 a gallon for regular and $0.32 for premium. I was making $1.00/hr plus tips minimum wage. Back then you checked oil, checked and filled the battery, checked tires pressure and washed the windshield to hustle a few extra $ in tips. In comparison back then I could buy three almost four gallons of gas for an hours wage today you can't buy two gallons for the minimum wage, and nobody pumps gas for you!

Yeah, the Government numbers on inflation are BS. Just like unemployment numbers.

I no longer buy the beer I used to buy because the cost went from $11-12 a 12 pack to $16-17. I now make my own beer but even the beer kits are expensive. Bagels I used to buy were about $3 for a bag of six. Then the bag had five bagels for $3 and now it is four for $3. No inflation my fanny. My grocery store has some roast beef in the deli that is some sort of man made product full of salt water. Disgusting stuff that costs $5-6 a pound. I was just back in FLA and Publix had REAL Boars Head Roast Beef! :licking::licking::licking: But that real meat was $11-12 a pound! Try to find a gallon of ice cream in the store...

I was looking at frozen pies the other day. I had a hankering for a pie but I usually do not buy because I don't want to spend the money and I surely do not need the calories. I had not looked at frozen pies in months but they were a couple of dollars higher than what they used to be which made it easy to walk away. Well, sorta, I still had a hankering for some pie.:laughing::laughing:

Fuel prices have been higher but my log book shows a consistently high price over the last 4-6 years. It was NOT that long ago when I paid 99 cents a gallon for diesel at a truck stop at mile marker 6 in GA on I95. On the drive back from FLA, we got off at mile marker 6 to visit that truck stop, a place we had visited for almost 20 years, and the place was closed! That place was always busy and now it is a ghost town. :confused3: Looks a like Shell built a large stop across the street and they had deeper pockets and drove out the old truck stop.

Anything made from corn or using oil costs more which covers many of the things we buy, especially food. Low inflation my fanny. Along with the low inflation lie, add in no or little raises for those WITH jobs and things are worse. Course it is really bad for the people who can't find work which gets to the other big lie, unemployment figures.

Later,
Dan

Dumb question but does Uncle Sam consider food or fuel when looking at inflation numbers? My feeble memory says that I have read an article somewhere that showed what items where considered or used for inflation calculations and I don't believe food and fuel where on that list.

That's the way the govt. cooks the books...They say food and fuel fluctuate too much to include...that is their excuse...but I think it is not included since food and fuel are some of the most purchased items and would show the inflation in it's true form.....they don't want that...how could they justify keeping Social Security and other things linked to the CPI down.....also how could they continue to force interest rates down to abnormal levels....????

Just wait until this bubble bursts....I heard on the financial news this AM that in 2008 when Lehman Bros went Bankrupt....the deficit was $900 billion....now it is $3.5 Trillion and growing...and David Stockman said when this bubble bursts it will bring everything down with it....Buckle up !

Things that we "HAVE" to buy such as food & fuel are not counted in the inflation numbers.
Fuel is just about double what it was 4 years ago.
Electricity ( I don't think it counts either) is up around 25% in a lot of areas.
Health care in Calif is up 146% in the last 4 years. That does not count either.

Processed foods have gone up a lot, but real food is still pretty cheap. 20 lbs. of long grain white rice for $10. 20 lbs of pinto beans for $15. 10 lbs. of russet potatoes for $2.49. Fresh vegetables have to be air freighted in unless you live in California or Florida, but frozen vegetables are cheap. They clean out the old crop in the spring, and I paid $0.89 a pound for a couple grocery bags full last month. Last night we had creamed (local) new potatoes and peas. 6 servings for about $2.50.

Beef prices are way up thanks to the drought last year, and the beef cattle herd is still shrinking, so now would be the time to put a calf on pasture. It will be at least a couple years before prices turn around. My last trip to the market I spotted two beautiful 16 oz. boneless ribeyes in the meat case for $8.50 apiece. I was tempted, but still have a freezer full of beef from the drought, when I bought the same cuts for $3.50. Supply and demand. As farmers say, the cure for high prices is high prices. One year without drought or floods and things will turn around.

Meanwhile, stay clear of processed foods. Get a bread machine and make your own bread. Bake your own pot pies, which are cheap and easy to make. We do something similar in a calzone style, just wrapping meat and vegetables in pie crust and baking it, then freezing it. If you're short on time, you can pull something out of the freezer, nuke it and have dinner in 10 minuts. My wife and I go nuts in the kitchen once a month, and split the food into daily portions and freeze it that way. We also home can a lot of fruit, like applesauce and tomato sauce. That's mostly because the commercial stuff tastes like crap. Our applesauce is Gravenstein, and our tomato sauce is from good old high acid heritage tomatoes. You can't buy flavor like that at any price.

Most of the reason you think food is expensive is because you are buying stuff you don't have to buy. Learn to cook.

Lots of things have gone up in price, but consumers still expect computers to be cheaper and cheaper and much more powerful and store more.
