omega 3 fish oil supplement linked to prostate problems?

I took my fish oil pill this morning.

All these "studies" remind me of the George Carlin bit -

NEWS FLASH - Researchers have determined that SALIVA causes mouth cancer. However, only when ingested in very small amounts and over a long period of time.

They have known for years that eating the foods with all the good vitamins and minerals is what helps you, not taking the pills. But it is a multi-billion $ industry, so the FDA plays along. That is what happens when the safety regulators are also the PR men for an industry.

So do like your Mamma always told you. Eat your veggies.

I saw Dr. Gupta speaking of this, this am. Came away thinking the results were inconclusive at this time. I take it daily or almost daily. On the advice of a Doctor.
Like most supplements there is little or no clinical evidence of health benefits. Most are taken based on hearsay or marketing ploys. Does not mean that there will not be health benefits, even if they are physiological, but it's hard to make it conclusive

Rule number one: If a doctor on TV says it, its probably wrong. A TV doctor that tells you to get off your fat butt and exercise, eat well and sleep well won't be on TV for long. A TV doctor that tells you that your local doctor is usually right won't be on TV long either. A TV doctor who tells you to take your medicine properly and ignore the minor risks and side effects will not generate ratings.

Rule number two: Supplements rarely have any significant positive or negative effect on anything. The more expensive the supplement the less likely it is to help or hurt your health. The more things a supplement is claimed to help, the less likely it is to help anything.

Rule number three: Most studies are flawed, regardless of the motivation for the study. Retrospective studies are the must suspect in my opinion because no matter what the sample size or how wonderfully complex the statistical massaging is they cannot effectively control variables.

Rule number four: Americans, and I am one, are almost pathologically impaired when it comes to evaluating risk. The media knows this and preys on it. This statement will send most Americans into a panic:

99% of all patients diagnosed with cancer have eaten ice cream in the 3 months prior to their diagnosis.

Rule number five: Heart disease is the most common killer in the US by far.

Rule number six: Most men who live long enough will get prostate cancer. Early intervention in the treatment of prostate cancer has not been shown to decrease mortality. I think some benefit will eventually be shown but it is far from dramatic. PSA testing is sensitive but it is not specific and is highly limited as a screening tool and even more limited in its effect on overall prostate cancer mortality.

So if you want to take fish oil, take it, enjoy the relatively minor benefit that it confers and rest assured that the chances that it will cause you to get or die from prostate cancer is immeasurably small. The chances that it will have any adverse effects other than fishy burps is just as small.

yep.. remember the butter / margerine debate.. now the hydrogenated fats inthe margerine are worse than the saturated fats in the butter... :)
