Justifying a cost of a diesel

At the price of diesel fuel these days I wouldn't consider a diesel powered truck a lesson in economics. Not to mention what the EPA is getting ready to do to the diesels. If you need the pulling or torque of a diesel in a truck or tractor it's a much better choice than gas. Diesel is thrifty not these days.

True words. And we desperately need to take a chainsaw to prune back the EPA. Clean Air and Clean Water Acts were needed in the beginning and did wonders fixing problems; but these days the EPA is out of control with AGW nuts, tree huggers, and PETAphiles in charge. Realistically, the EPA regulations shouldn't take more than a dozen 8.5 x 11 inch pages at 12 pitch print to cover everything in the entire country.

I just got a leftover F350 2012 diesel dump last week. The price was less than 500.00 more than a 2013 V8 gas job with the same equipment. That was a relatively easy justification for me to make. If it were 7 or 8k more than the gasser, it would be a no.

You got a great deal. Ya should have tired to get them to go lower.....pretty soon, it would have been Aug, and that's when the 2014 model years start to ship. You'd have a two year old truck sitting on the dealer lot....

I drive a duramax 2007. I have 92000 miles. Just recently drove KC to Winnipeg and back and two round trips KC to Galesburg Illinois. With no trailer I averaged 19.4 mpg. With my gooseneck and JD4750 or my spray rig Ill average 17 on highway. With a 16 foot 6 foot wide enclosed trailer I got 11.7.

For me, I cant trade it or go back to a gasser. Mileage w/o trailer won't be as good as what I have, gasser won't pull like the Duramax, and this one is paid for. I looked hard at a trade for a new Ford ecoboost or whatever it is But when you look at mileage if you set i up to pull a 20 foot gooseneck like I do, the little bugger gets under 14 mpg without a trailer. Diesel will always pencil out if you need a truck that works. If you just have a city driver truck stay gas.

This is interesting - few people have the V10s and I've never heard results from reprogramming it.

That said, that's double the fuel economy, and common sense says there is no way?
It is what it is. 8 to 10 mpg towing before reprogramming. 10-12 after. After reprogramming 180 mile trip empty, for you that is not towing, at 65 mph 13 mpg. On the return leg of 180 miles, again empty (not towing) at 60 mph (cruise was set both ways) 14.9 mpg. So you go figure. It is thirsty when I drag 3 yards of sand out of the sandpit in 4wd low range.

I just got back last Saturday. 6.0 pulling a boat got 10-11mpg and the 2 new Duramax with us got about 15 and one had double the weight of our boat.

That is awesome! Once the dmax break in, will improve. Did they share their empty mog!

Someone in another group mentioned buying a Nissan Leaf to thumb his nose at the oil companies. Based on the amount of driving he did, the price of fuel, the price of insurance, the price of electricity, over a 5 year span I figured he would spend a $100 a month to say "Screw you oil companies." In other words my math said it would be cheaper to keep driving his gas hog Honda. Seems silly that a Honda gets less than 20 mpg.

I have an electric car that cost $8500 after all factory and government rebates. I pay about $20 in electricity to go 1,000 miles each month.

I also have a 2500HD Silverado with 8.1L engine. I was getting less than 10mpg, not towing anything. With maintenance, I was paying $0.53 per mile. Doesn't include depreciation. So, I'm saving $500 per month on commuting, and I still have the truck for when I need to tow my trailer. When I don't need it, I have it in storage and don't pay insurance. I can take it out of storage for a day or two with a phone call or email.

12 more months and the car will have paid for itself.

Power? My Silverado can do 60 mph over Mt Hood towing my 7500 lb trailer. Mileage drops to 7 mpg though.
