I have posted these photo before, just reposting here, to show what I have done with my B3200 with BH 76 back hoe, rather large sweet gum, but was leaning in the right direction, only took me a day to dig it out, and push it over. You can see what I mean by over working my unit from these photos. I know, this could have been very unsafe, but did it any way.

WOW, now that tells me something. Helps of the wind is blowing the right way also:). did you keep digging in all the right places till it fell or did you do any pushing with the bucket. I would have been getting very uneasy when that thing began to show sign of falling. I have done things like that and never been hurt but sometimes I look back and admit there was some luck involved.

Any rate -- no shame for the backhoe.

Not much in the way of roots holding that big old tree in place, that's for sure. I'm glad it worked out OK for Troy. A bit of wind at the wrong moment and there's no telling where it would decide to go. I did a couple of trees like that and decided it would be better to take my chances with the chainsaw, pulling from up high or, if pushing was absolutely necessary, using the FEL. With the backhoe, you and your expensive equipment are sitting ducks if the tree goes the wrong way.

Some of the BH have a PTO kit ( like the woods) that runs it's hydraulics via the tractor PTO. The pto pump slides over the PTO on the tractor and you have to engage the PTO for the BH to work. I like that idea of separate hydraulics.

The idea seems fine to me also. The added cost of stand alone hydraulics, I guess would be my next question.

Look at the Grand L series as they offer larger pumps and heavier axles, loaders and 3PT capacities. Have a Bradco 408 on a L3130GST and run at 2100 -2300 rpm and get hydraulics fast enough for my work and it will pull the tractor around when digging into hard stuff. With a tractor this size a 4 point frame mount is the only way to go the 3 point is not strong enough. Bradco, Woods and Kubota all make good backhoes with mounting kits.

If you're shopping for a BH for your Kubota (or any other make of tractor, too), be sure to look at the factory options and some of the other manufacturers David mentioned. Wallenstein, Bush Hog and Rhino are also brands to check out for backhoes.

oh no, there were lots of roots holding that tree, it was a sweet gum, and I was able to start out a ways from the trunk, and break them with the hoe, started on the leaning side first, so that when it came time to push it down, it was already leaning the right direction. And yes they were big roots, but that is what took me all day was to nibble away with the BH teeth to break, and believe me that one root that is darker in color was very much alive and holding, matter of fact, it held the entire tree all by its self. it was only with lots of pushing that it finally fell, and I had the front end loader pushing hard into another live tree to keep the whole tractor from moving away from the stump, as that hoe will move the tractor all over the place, easy to reposition the tractor with it, that way.

Also if you really need the BH for big jobs etc., the B26, L35, L39 would be the way to go, lots more power to the hydraulics , or just rent a small track hoe, is really the way to go. Like I said before, even with a BH of my own, I still rent the six to seven thousand pound machines just for their ease of use. Any where from $125 to $180 a day where I am at, is all its cost, cheaper by the week also.

10-4 on renting. Lot of bang for the buck on special projects. But that is for when I am ready for serious business. Those honey do's and things that just come up in the process of doing other things warrants a small backhoe, especially if your are too old to go cross country on a motorcycle trip but still like to play.
