I urge everybody to make use of their local, state & federal resources. We all complain about how much money we have to give to the tax man. Few of us utilize the services we are paying for.

Well Bill did you ever determine what type of bug you had?

Bill - showed it to my wife; she said "Squash bug, use Sevin". Then I let her read your post about where you found it. Look on the undersides of the leaves for shiny, dime-sized egg clusters. Eggs are about as big a the head of a pin, and you can crush them on the leaf - wife uses a highly technical customized tool - a small rock. We hold the leaf with an open hand, and rub the rock over the cluster to crush it. This works good for a few dozen plants, especially if you don't want to use too much pesticide. Also, there's a more organic stuff called Pyola - she found it on the internet, and she's using it this year - sprayed after she found the bugs, and so far there are no more bugs. It needs to be reapplied after rain. Also, she adds, you can tell if the bugs are on your plants from a distance if they start looking droopy or wilted.

I didn't read any of the links (because I got my own 'link" standing right here /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif), so maybe this is all repetition.

Correct it is a squash bug. I grew up calling them stink bugs, because when you squash them, your fingers stink.

Seven works as does any pesticide with Methoxiclor or Throdan. I use Throdan. I try to be organic, but when it comes to the Squash Bugs and Jap Beetles, I resort to the strong stuff.

Two years ago, I tried to be completely organic in the garden. Early August, I literally had 5000 of those bug in my small garden. You couldn't walk in to the garden without a couple running up you pant legs. Needless to say, my wife did not venture into the garden that summer.

Squash bugs will also bother cucumbers and muskmelons.

Any bug that my kids see, they ask, "Daddy, what kind of bug is that?" to which I always reply, no matter what kind of bug it is, "It's a stink bug."

EWWWW!!! they scream and my wife gives me "the look". /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

I asked the master gardener wife, she got out the books and said it looked like a squash bug.

Can any of you identify this bug I found on my squash plant in the garden? Thanks.

Bugguide.net may be very helpful.

Since the pics aren't coming out clearly to us, it would probably be better if you would spend a couple of minutes on the site and let us know if you can find a match!
