it's fuel related for sure, if it has spark and runs on start fluid.

carb ain't clean.

Just had a single cylinder do this exact thing - run, stop, restart.. Cleaned carb 3 times and replaced coil.. Ended up being the spark plug. Now, I know you have more than one :))) but, I would start there and work back.. You should be able to see if your getting fuel by looking at your plugs anyways..

Check your engine grounds too..

I took the carburetor apart for the 3rd time today. I honestly don't know what I did differently this time cleaning it, but after I reinstalled the carb, the tractor started right up. I will have to wait until we have some more nice weather to use it in the field and really find out if it is fixed. Tonight I drove it up a long hill on the road in high gear and it ran perfectly. I'll post back if it starts acting up again.

Thank you.

It appears that my carburetor problem is finally resolved. We were haying today and yesterday. "The infamous 41", as my dad calls it, got lots of hours with different equipment. It ran great!

Because the tractor would run fine sometimes I thought it had to be some kind of intermittent problem like the float hanging up or vapor lock. After all of this, I am still not 100% sure what fixed it. My best guess is that something was plugged down at the bottom of the float bowl that allows gas through to the main jet. I just wanted to give an update. Thanks for the suggestions.

might be worth completely cleaning the tank and all screens this winter.

Please allow me to tag into this question. I see this issue being repeated over and over across the years on this forum, as I have for the last two weeks read and tried to "catch up" on all the years TBN has had these discussions on tractor problems going on. Seems like this is a MAJOR recurring issue for many people across the country. I don't know if it should be a new thread or not, but to try to start from scratch and ignore all the comments and detective work which got us to this point in the discussion would be a shame. Could you say something about the issue of scale or other trash in the tank, what causes it, and what can be the results. What can be done about it? I have heard differing opinions about coatings, replacing with new tanks, etc. What is the best route to go, considering some makes' vintage tanks are more or less unavailable than others? This issue really causes people to lose alot of productive time, I'm afraid, and we need advice to put it behind us once and for all. I have dealt with this myself, and still do. Thanks for any experienced ideas.

I have the exact same problem! What you disscribed is exactly what my Ford is doing. Did you figure it out yet?
Thanks Rick. It usually starts right back up. I really think it is a fuel problem. I have double checked the wiring. It is all new, as are the points, condenser and key switch. The tractor was already 12v when I restored it, so I didn't replace the coil.

I think it is a fuel problem. The problem is worse when operating under a heavy load (like discing in a higher gear). The problem rarely happens with a full tank. When it shuts off, it doesn't seem like the float is completely stuck shut, but more like it just isn't getting enough gas. If I hear the engine missing, I can sometimes push in the clutch and let it idle for a while and go back to work.

I am thinking it could be fuel restriction problem. Engine burns fuel at a faster rate than what the restriction will allow to maintain proper level in carb. The tractor runs at first due to the surplus of fuel in the carb bowl, but when the surplus is used up it quits. Then immediately the carb is being filled because it is just a restriction. I just can't find what's causing the restriction.

Spark... coil, wire or plug. Had several plugs do exactly this lately.. couple here on TBN too..

Worth a look.
