Compact Diesel trucks that we can't get here

In the front, maybe. The rear, makes no sense to me. I sure do not know, Dave.

Tons of newer 4-door small (by USA standards) pickup trucks all over South America. Regular
pickups (2-door, 6-8' cargo beds) are extremely rare. I saw maybe 3 total Ford F150s on my
trip, and no GMs or Chrysler large PUs at all. Some marketers decided that buyers there
all wanted a do-everything vehicle, one that could carry a dirty cargo as well as 5 passengers.

Kinda like marketers in the US deciding that Americans don't want a regular small 4x4 pickup (2-doors,
standard cargo bed), and one with perhaps a 25-35 mpg diesel engine.

Thanks df - yes, I was thinking about the front hubs. Many parts of Asia Pacific, etc. get their trucks delivered from the factory the way the hard core off-road guys pay extra to set them up here.

Everything here has to be auto everything, so nobody (including the women) break any nails on the way to the Mall.

Good review. Towing capacity of 6600lbs and a bed capacity of 2500lbs. If a person took a serious look at just how they use their current truck, those capacities should be more than adequate for 95% of users.

reality is, if your towing/hauling more than this it really should be on a 3/4-1ton frame anyway IMHO.

Ive said for years id put my money were my mouth is on the hilux/LC issue. Hate virtually all new trucks and refuse to buy one. I WAS looking forward to the mahindra truck as that was along the lines of many listed here.... but alas greed got the better of that one also. The same greed that keeps the car manufactures from produceing one of these for us now.

I may be only one of the few that didn't know, but I stumbled (on a bitbasher's site of all places) across the Chicken Tax today.

I probably was brain-washed by all the Free Market kumbayah I keep hearing..... that's my excuse.... ;)

Explains a lot of where we sit today.

Yeah, most of the effects of the tariff were hidden from the public, until we saw the Subaru Brat in
1978. It was such an in-your-face way to circumvent the law by installing seats in the bed
of a pickup truck. Removable seats.

Another ramification was the very tight supply of small pickups on the market back in the 60s
and 70s. U.S. makers did not have them, so your choices were Datsun and Toyota. I bought
my first one (71 Datsun PL521) in the mid 70s when I lived in Michigan. I looked and looked
for many months before landing a rusty fixer for a premiun price. Sold it shortly after for
a profit when another later Datsun came up.

Here is your latter-day Datsun, a Nissan Navarra in Lima (2013).

I had to go look - you guys get the Frontier today (starting at $3k below Canadian list ). Is the Navarra a different platform than the Frontier ?

Now if Nissan would just put a diesel (back !) into the Frontier here ! Faster to build it myself though.... :blacksmith:

How are you going to get a basic stripper diesel pickup in 2013 with 2013 EPA emissions ratings?
The diesel that doesn't have a particulate filter, urea injection , cooled EGR and cat converter does sell in "other " countries.
Trucks are sold as luxury vehicles by manufactures to make the vehicle profitable. Add $500 worth of options and charge $10,000 extra for the gadgets .
New vehicles under 25,000-30,000 cost manufactures instead of being profitable. The ecoboxes are required to keep the coporate average economy up.

Hey, this is supposed to be a fantasy truck thread ;) , and you come along and get all realistic !

Sigh.... yeah, I know..... I'll either have to import something JDM, or move to..... well, just about anywhere except Can/USA.
