Wild Turkeys anyone?

That looks like about 3 hens and their broods. The young ones here look to be about the same size. Isn't it great to see these magnificent birds in the wild and in your own back yard?

We get them on and off, the Red Fox moved into the corner and the Hens stopped roosting and laying eggs on my place but still come thru as adults regularly.

under the (far back) willow tree are 6 in the pic but hard to see click pic for full size.

We have wild turkey that comes around in the fall and most of the time in our backyard. Last year when I first spotted them I would drive to the store and pick up a few bags of bread crumbs but when I got home I would hurry and place the crumbs in a brown paper bag. Now when my daughter gets home from school she would love to go out and feed the turkey's but one day she looked in the trash and seen the bags was turkey stuffing and got all upset thinking I was going to shoot them. I had to sit her down and tell her that my ammo was to big for turkey's and that my ammo is only used against human turkey's.

Now when it comes to deer my wife thinks I take better care of my deer than her rats with fur and I believe most people call them cats. I just bought a new feeder and 50lb bag of deer corn but she can't complain I did by her rats a few cans of cat food. As of this year even though I am a private land owner I must a special permit to hunt on my own land for turkey and deer if I wanted to here in Alabama.

LIKE CHICKEN!!

I dont like the legs on the wild ones, always seem "tough" to me. Breast is good especially if slow roasted or smoked (I prefer smoked)

I get them more here in the winter, some in the early Spring. Rio Grande turkey like to travel and can cover allot of ground in short order. They seem to prefer winter range and summer range that over laps to a degree. Fun as H$(( to hunt in the Spring too! During deer season I just watch and enjoy them.

It's been a long time since I have eaten wild turkey, but I found it a bit too gamy for my taste, especially the drumsticks. It was, however, killed on a Spring hunt, and the bird had little or no fat. I suspect the diet during the Winter had something to do with the gamy taste, but couldn't be sure. I always speculated that a Fall turkey would be a bit fatter and a bit more well-fed and that might affect the flavor some.

Breast meat is delicious ... The rest is great for soup or stock... The leg meat is very tough, since they walk miles and miles every day foraging for food, unlike their cousins who sit in a pen a gorge themselves

Turkeys have been repopulated just about everywhere now for sporting purposes. They tend to form big groups in the winter but disperse in the spring. Most people only use the breast meat but the very tough legs and thighs make a very good soup if allowed to cook for a while (I smoke them first).
