That looks like a early 70ish model 3000 or 4000. They came out of the factory with a neutral safety switch. When they fail, lots of folks wired around them instead of buying a replacing them. Cheap insurance at less than $13. Ford Tractor Neutral Safety Switches

Well I guess that one was wired around

I am no expert on old Fords, but I doubt it ever even had any kind of Neutral safety switch. I know our old Farmall Super A sure did not. If you left it in gear and hit the starter it would move forward. These older tractors just don't have much safety equipment.

I agree...safety switches probably were not installed on that tractor.
However, the key (assuming the ignition system hadn't been jury rigged) should not have been in the ignition switch.

My Ford 8N (built in late 1947) had a neutral safety switch. I know all 8Ns did, and I'm pretty certain the earlier 9Ns did as well. The tractor in the picture is at least 25 years newer, and would have definitely had a neutral safety switch.

It sounds like Ford was ahead of some others at the time, as our 49 Farmall Super A sure did not.

When did they start putting them on cars/trucks? I heard an account of someone extracting themselves from a flooded road or something after the engine died. They just put it in gear and used the starter motor to creep out.

I'm not sure if that's an urban legend or truth.
The version I heard was a car stuck (stalled or something like that) on a railroad crossing and the driver used the starter motor to creep off the tracks.

I've done that in water, not tracks, and when a car needed to be moved but wouldn't start.

My wife's FJ Cruiser has a manual, and you can start it with the tranny in gear, and the clutch out, but only if you push an override button. They do that so you can restart it while rock crawling, or other off road situations, where it's impossible to let off the brakes, then release the clutch without rolling backwards, possibly into danger.
