In many markets you can get no dial tone DSL. DSL run on copper, not on a dial tone.

We have Century for our one and only land line based Internet. Their service stinks but we have no cable or other competition. People all over the county complain about slow and no service. They are doing upgrades to the system and service has improved but we only get 1.5 mbps down yet houses 1/4 mile away, on a different network segment, get 10 mbps.

Internet is far more important to us than a land line. Even with our bad service there is no other option that is as affordable and provides the amount of data we use per month.

A land line phone is useful for 911 calls, service in power outages, and we use the number to give to people we don't want to talk too. ;):laughing::laughing:

As far as I know both Wild Blue Excede and the Hughes equivalent satellite based systems are available throughout USA.

Thanks for the replies. I looked into all of the ISP's you all mentioned that are available in my area. Right now it looks like I can't beat the price of my current phone bill including the DSL. Plus the DSL is unlimited and reliable. I will continue to search. I just have no use for a Land line.

They call it a dry line. Verizon says they do not do that any more. Maybe I need to threaten to cancel the service and they will offer it.

I have used my phone in power outages. I thought the cell towers had so sort of back up power.

We have both land line and DSL (10mbps) Internet from CenturyLink (used to be CenturyTel). I'm satisfied with them.

Shoot - here I have no tele land line, no cable, no DSL - just clear, blue open skies. My ISP is Hughes Net. Works good for me and provides service 99.9% of the time. My tele is cell phone which works about 50% of the time - this more than satisfies me.

We have wireless (WiFi) service through a local provider. The same as the wireless router in your house, only expanded over many miles with much stronger equipment. It is the only thing available other than cellular and satellite-based services here.

I'm extremely happy with 12Mb download and 8Mb upload speeds.

Cell is supposed to have backup, but for us, the cell is not as reliable as a land line in a power outage. I don't know if it is the tower that runs out of power or some other link, but cell has not been as reliable in a power outage for us compared to the land line. We also like having the land line as a backup communication device.
