How big is your garden and how many tomato plants?

Jim,

Maybe if she wraps the zip-lock with duct tape in the shape of a brick it won't be as noticeable:D:D

My wife dries a lot of herbs to. Currently we are trying make our own cayenne pepper. Have some drying now alone with all the other herbs.

She also make her own vanilla extract. We order vanilla beans and she puts them in a half gallon of vodka and half gallon of bourbon. It sits for several months and is great stuff. She gives it as gifts. I also have very sweet smelling breath:eek:

The cooler weather is slowing down the peppers. I have lots of new blooms but they will not make peppers before frost.

Picked these last night for a produce stand. I will wholesale these for right at $50.00. I don't really have enough to take to the farmers market and the produce stand buys all my excess.

Lots of peppers still on the plants.

That's a nice haul, David. There's lots of good eating and loads of flavor in those baskets. We have more peppers than we can eat and so much okra that we can't keep any of what we pick. We have to give it all away to my neighbor who takes the excess to dialysis and shares them with lots of people. My wife keeps saying that she is going to just let the garden go, but she can't stand it when she looks down there and the tomatoes and okra need picking. It's been a great year for us and you have had a bountiful harvest as well.:)

Here are some pictures of the "snake" gourds from this summer. If you plant near a trellis they will stretch out sort-of straight. Uhh, that's if your trellis is tall enough and mine wasn't. They stay outside to try to dry and then we see what we have in the way of seeds.

Some of these are more than 5 ft long

Here's a dry one from years past. It's light as a feather.

I took down the garden fence a few weeks ago to till up the melons. It seemed like the deer found the peppers that same night. {you can see all the deer tracks in the dirt on each side of the peppers} The plants on the west end of the rows don't have any leaves left, yet the peppers are still making.

The plants on the east end of the rows have been ate some, but still have most of their leaves. {I had already picked about four gallons of peppers when I took the pictures}

This was the haul, after we had cooked stuffed and unstuffed peppers out of them.

It is taking longer between pickings now. And the temps are getting down into the low 40's at night, so this might be the last big picking.

Seems maybe we discussed this before, but do you wait until after first frost to pick Brussel Sprouts? I can't believe I didn't know how they grew until this year, and now I see pictures of them everywhere.:confused2:

Larro:
Do the deer eat peppers or just the leaves?

Jim I say you really don't have to wait until a frost but they're certainly cold tolerant.
Just like this other vegetable many folks feel that the frost gives them more flavor

Schoolkids came to the orchard again yesterday and yours truly had to lead them on tour. So while we were out in the field I harvested one of these that we grow and asked who knew what it was. Most said it was a radish lol and some were close using the all too common misnomer name locals here refer to them as and only one person (an adult with the group) had it exact! ;)
